Many thanks to everyone who made our bookfair an amazing success. This is a big fundraiser for the library. Thanks to shoppers for helping earn more than 150 new hardcover books for the library. Thank you to PTO and parents for donating more than 40 books to classrooms. Also, thank you to students, teachers, parents and community members who donated more than $160.00 to provide a book to each of the 25 students who would not otherwise have been able to afford a book at this fair. We hope that you will join us in the spring when Scholastic offers their Buy One/Get One fair, and we thank you again for your wonderful generosity.
Exciting News and Events
Happy New Year! The staff here at Newport/Plymouth Elementary School are excited to be back at school with our students. We would like to remind everyone that we do go outside for recess when the temperature and real feel is 10 degrees or higher. Please make sure your child has winter boots, ski pants, gloves, a jacket and a hat for playing outside. IN OTHER NEWS We have been recognizing students once a week from each lunch that have exhibited excellent behavior in the lunchroom. The students’ names are then entered into a drawing to sit at a special lunch table! Below are some students that were selected before vacation. Keep up the great work!
This Just In: Writing gives students an exciting and creative way to teach others what they know. Mrs. Folger’s third grade students are working on writing nonfiction books. Each student is researching an African animal and organizing their research into chapters. Students are learning how to outline their chapters into boxes and bullets before beginning their writing. This is helping them learn how to write in paragraphs. The students are doing a remarkable job determining what information is important to include in each chapter.
HORNETHerald IN OTHER BREAKING NEWS… On December 21 our students were very excited to get their own private concert during each lunch period from the Family Circle Band. The three local sisters sang lots of favorite tunes to the students and even took several requests. It was a wonderful experience for the students who were able to dance and sing along as they enjoyed their lunches.
Stand By’er Assembly Students were very excited about our December assembly! We recognized 10 students at the assembly for being Stand By’ers. Each student recognized received a certificate, pencil and pencil topper.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS… Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade have been participating in a striking game called foursquare. Foursquare has a long history of being a great childhood hand-eye coordination game and is played on playgrounds around the world every day. It is a game that has been around since at least the 1950s and kids are still enjoying it today.
Mr. King would like to send everyone a friendly reminder to dress for success! This includes wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for vigorous exercise.
At Newport/Plymouth Elementary School we are safe, responsible and respectful. If you see your child come home with a Hornet Hero sticker, please ask him/her how he/she earned it!
PBIS Update In the month of January, students will continue to work on being a stand-by’er. A standby’er is someone who speaks up for others who may be hurt, sad or upset.
