Year 7OG are (wonderful!) writers and artists……. In English, Year 7 have been looking at Australian literature and have completed a novel study, ”Black Snake-The Daring of Ned Kelly”. We have written an imaginative recount on an event in the novel-”As if I were there…” and answered the question “Was Ned a hero, victim or villain?” We also looked at the Sidney Nolan series of Ned Kelly paintings and created our own interpretations.

“Such is life!” were the brave daring bushranger’s last words. Ned Kelly was standing up for what he believed in when he was hung in a Melbourne goal. …. Ned Kelly is the 21st century image of police persecution……. I believe Ned Kelly was a victim when you look closely at all the unfairness and injustice he copped in his lifetime! Molly C

Villain, thief, murderer and a coward- this is what people have called Ned Kelly. These people are wrong! Ned Kelly was a victim of police harassment. This topic is important because Ned Kelly is a folk hero in Australia’s history and symbolizes the “aussie battler”. Some people contradict this by stating that a criminal’s actions can never be justified. But Ned Kelly is different- he was coaxed into a life of crime by police persecution- he was a victim! Jack T

In conclusion, Ned was a coward and a threat to society. Ned took far more than he ever needed! He stole many people’s lives. I believe Ned went to where he belonged- in a Melbourne gaol hanged for his devastating crimes and buried in an unmarked grave. I will always remember Ned as an outlaw, a thief and especially a murderer! Oscar D

Ned Kelly was a villainous young man who had broken a million laws in his time. He was a terrible coward for trying to escape justice, a sneaky thief and a murderer of the innocent. Everyone has different opinions of him- as a hero, victim or villain. He has shaped the history of Australia because of the many mysteries surrounding him. He belonged to a family who lived in poverty, however he had absolutely no right to steal cattle, rob banks, take innocent hostages and murder policemen! Nevian A

From a young age, Ned and his brothers were stealing horses and cattle and in trouble with the police. He was many things- a murderer, a robber, a coward! Ned might have saved a little boy from drowning but one good deed doesn’t make someone a hero now, does it? So, I ask again, should someone like Ned Kelly be an Australian hero? Andrew J

If you were born into poverty, your Dad died when you were twelve and the corrupt lazy police wanted nothing more than to see you behind bars, what would you have done? This was the life of Australia’s famous bushranger. Many say that Ned was a villain, but I believe he was a victim because he fought for his Mum’s justice and never once did the police treat his family well.
