Per Diem Allowances
Room and board may be provided to a student-athlete during official vacation periods in which they are required to remain on the institution’s campus for organized practice sessions or competition.
If an institution does not provide it’s student-athletes with a meal, a cash allowance may be provided.
Any student-athletes that will be remaining on campus for injury rehabilitation reasons may also receive a per diem allowance.
If any student-athletes will be receiving a per diem allowance, please contact the Compliance Office for more details.
Compliance MVP Anthony DeJesse This month’s compliance MVP comes to us from the athletic ticket operations office. The compliance office would like to recognize Anthony DeJesse for his hard work when it comes to complimentary admissions, and his great attitude during game-day.
Social Media Recruiting Changes
On December 5th, the NCAA staff released a new interpretation that allows institutional staff members to “friend” or “follow” prospective studentathletes of any grade level on social media sites. Previously, the NCAA viewed the action of to “friending” or “following” an individual before the permissible time time-period to be a violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.4.1.2, since the action of “friending” or “following” an individual generated an email (electronic correspondence) to that person. The new interpretation only allows for social media interaction, and does not allow for texting, phone calls, or other such recruiting before the permissible timeline.
Outside Competition
A student-athlete may compete outside of the institution's declared playing and practice season as a member of an outside team in any noncollegiate, amateur competition during any official vacation period. All student-athletes must have participation in outside competitions approved by the compliance office PRIOR to the event taking place. If you know of any student-athletes interesting in participating in outside competition, please direct them to the compliance office to fill out the proper paperwork.

Compliance Side-Bar Please run all proposed general correspondence through the Compliance Office to verify its permissibility. If you or your staff have any questions as to who may receive recruiting materials, and what materials may be sent, please ask the Compliance Office.
In the News The University of Georgia recently sent impermissible recruiting materials to over a dozen prospective student-athletes, who were not of the NCAA-allowed grade level to receive general correspondence. The recruiting material had impermissible envelopes and also contained impermissible general correspondence. The University responded by suspending their football on-campus recruiting coordinator and self-reporting the violations.

Texting All text messaging to prospects is banned until: The calendar day when the prospective student-athlete has signed a National Letter of Intent or offer of financial aid, and approval has been sent by the Compliance office, On or after May 1 if the institution has received the prospective studentathlete’s room or tuition deposit, or On or after May 1 if the institution has received the prospective studentathlete’s financial deposit.
Compliance Updates As we approach final exams, and the winter break period, the majority of our teams will be out-of-season. It is important to remember that the NCAA bylaws remain in effect year-round, and despite most of our student-athletes being gone through this time-period, we must still continue to abide by NCAA legislations.
