The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the 5th annual Gatorade Pong Tournament on November 21st, to raise money for The Zack Hinish Foundation. The foundation is in honor of Zack Hinish who passed away at the age of five. Hinish struggled with neurological diseases; however, that never stopped him from living life to the fullest.

Gatorade Pong is an exciting event for SAAC, because the entire Saint Francis community comes together to make the event successful. SAAC also teamed up with Greek Life this year to get more of the Saint Francis community involved.

The foundation is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping children deal with cognitive or physical disabilities.

Participants get creative with the event from their team names to the costumes that they wear to Gatorade Pong.

This year SAAC raised $1,405 for the foundation, which was the most amount of money that has ever been raised through Gatorade Pong.

Also, Brent Zierer, who signed with the Red Flash Football team through Team Impact last year also competed in the event.

"It is tremendous to see this event grow every year and also continue to set records with the amount of money raised for the Zack Hinish Foundation,” said Associate Director of Athletics John Krimmel. Michael Fox, and Johnny Sheesley (team

name: Alpha Kenny Wun) received first place, Angelo Perrucci and Zane Stewart (team name: Pappa Roochres) received second and Damian Smith and Dalton Cesarz (team name: The Muffin Stuffers) received third.

“SAAC has done a great job putting together an event that brings ALL students together for a fun and safe evening; while also making a difference in the community,” said Krimmel. In the past five years SAAC has raised $5,337 for the Zack Hinish Foundation through Gatorade Pong alone.

How to Maintain A Healthy Immune System The immune system is a complex, dynamic, and beautifully orchestrated mechanism with enormous responsibility. It defends against foreign invasion by microorganisms, screens out cancer cells, adapts as we grow, and modifies how we interact with our environment. When it malfunctions, sickness, disease, cancer or death can occur. Although it is not necessary to understand all the details of the immune system, we should understand how to stay healthy. An easy way to monitor if your immune system is at an optimal level is to record your resting heart rate, when you first wake up in the morning before getting out of bed. A progressive increase may tip you off that you are exceeding your ability to recover. Now that you have a way to determine when your immune system might be compromised,

what do you do to regain optimal function and boost your immune system? The best way is to address as many factors as possible that contribute to the function of your immune system. For example: if you know that a hard week of practices and/or games is coming up that is going to be physically a lot of stress on your body, then you want to balance that by making sure your diet is a little bit healthier then normal (exchanging one soda or dessert a day with a water or piece of fruit), get as much school work out of the way as possible to relieve stress from school, make sure your getting a little extra sleep each night. Basically if one area of the immune system is effected the others can make up for it and help get through that period of increased stress, this will help keep your body healthy and also aid in recovery between workouts and practices.

SAM Jam #4: De-Stress Fest The Student-Athlete Mentors held their final SAM Jam event of the semester, De-Stress Fest, on December 2nd. The goal of this event was to help relieve stress before finals week. Students were free to roam around the gym as they pleased and were encouraged to participate in the various activities. There were stations where students could make their own stress balls out of sand and balloons, a coloring station, a popcorn machine, a candy bar station, and even take photos with Santa Claus in the Winter Wonderland photo booth! Students were also able to satisfy their competitive nature by playing backyard games like Kan Jam and basketball. Certified Zumba instructor, Gabbi Townsend helped the students literally shake off their stress with upbeat dance sessions with large groups of student-athletes. Freshman, Mederick Flavius, a.k.a De-Bo, was reported to be among the most talented Zumba participants of the evening. Students left feeling, refreshed, revived, and ready to take on finals.

Coach of the Month: Coach Casper I thought we had a very good season this year. Setting the school record for wins (13) and for shutouts (10) speaks to that regard. Beating Teams like West Virginia, and William & Mary alludes to the quality the guys played with and winning the Northeast Conference Regular Season Championship for the first time in school history are all memories we will take with us for a long time. It is also a little bitter sweet as we felt as if we could have and possibly should have won the NEC tournament crown here on our home field. We are all a little disappointed we couldn't win that trophy for all the people that supported us so well throughout the season. All that being said, I am proud of this team, proud of all the guys, and am happy to have had the opportunity and privilege to go on such a special journey with all of them. It is hard to list just one or two strengths that we had this year as it takes a true team to have such a memorable season. Each player on the field, and each position group on the field relies on the one next to them in order to be successful. We have some very special players for sure, but they would be the first to say that without the support of the guys around them what they have done this year wouldn't be possible. Last year we cracked into the national Top 25 poll, this year we won the conference regular season title and had 13 wins. We talk about development in stages here, as a team and as a program. First, learning how to be competitive. Next, learning how to win, and then learning how to win consistently. Finally, we have to learn how to win championships and push our way into the NCAA tournament. That is the stage we are in right now and hopefully next season we can take that final step. Lastly, it is a goal of mine and our team to continue to pursue excellence in every area of our lives. To get a little better each day, and to represent the university as best as we possibly can.
