Jesus Changes Everything — Session 1— EXTRA! Ideas for Adults Date: December 31, 2017 Jesus Heals The Point: Jesus brings healing to our lives.

Get Into the Study Use this story to introduce The Point: Jesus brings healing to our lives. Time magazine has named “The Silence Breakers” of the #MeToo movement as its Person of the Year for 2017. Over the last few months, the #MeToo movement has gained prominence as victims of sexual assault stepped forward with their stories. The continuous stream of new revelations of sexual assault and misconduct remind us just how broken by sin our world is. In this session, we will see how Jesus brings healing to our lives, including physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Whether you think you have a plan for finding healing on your own, or you feel hopeless, there is always hope in Christ. (Note: As your group considers this topic, avoid discussing any specific cases of sexual assault in your group time.) Nikki Wilbanks is a stay-at-home mom, writer, Bible study leader, and commercial real estate appraiser/investor. She graduated from Pepperdine University, and lives with her husband and two children in Murfreesboro, TN.

Get Into the Study To introduce today's session in a light-hearted way, gather a list of several home remedies for common ailments. As you read each one aloud, invite group members to decide if the remedy actually works or not by a show of hands if they believe the remedy is "Fact" or "False." The following list taken from "12 Weird Home Remedies: Fact or Faked?" 1.

A bowl of onions in the room wards off the flu. [FALSE]

2.

Chocolate eases coughs. [FACT]

3.

A copper penny over a bee sting provides relief from pain and swelling. [FALSE]

4.

Licorice helps heal sore throats. [FACT]

5.

Toothpaste takes the itch out of bug bites. [FACT]

6.

Sprinkle white flour on a minor burn to help it heal. [FALSE]

7.

Tea bags help ease the pain of cold sores. [FACT]

[This idea supports the group plan in the Young Adult Leader Guide.]

Joni Eareckson Tada, the Founder and CEO of Joni and Friends International Disability Center, is an international advocate for people with disabilities. A diving accident in 1967 left Joni Eareckson, then 17, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, without the use of her hands. After two years of rehabilitation, she emerged with new skills and a fresh determination to help others in similar situations. On July 30, 2017 Joni celebrated 50 years of living well in her wheelchair, a remarkable testimony to God's sustaining grace. In an interview with Christianity Today, Joni was asked many questions about her condition and her walk with God. In response to a question about understanding suffering, Joni said this: “When people ask about healing, I'm less interested in the physical and more interested in healing in my heart. Pray that I get rid of my lazy attitude about God's Word and prayer, of brute pride—set me free from selfcenteredness. Those are more important, because Jesus thought they were more important.” 

Why is it difficult to endure a malady while trusting the God who could remove it?

What can faithful Christians who suffer physically and chronically teach the church?

How can we begin putting the “healing in my heart” ahead of physical needs, especially when God does not bring physical healing?
