Summary: lower-than-expected production, stocks numbers give grain market a boost Corn: corn harvested acreage unchanged this month despite a 400k-acre loss in plantings, though yields are cut by 0.9 bushels per acre to 168.4 bpa, thus production falls by 53 million bushels from December. Imports rise 10 mbu while exports lose 50 mbu this month on a slow pace, other usage also down 10 mbu, meaning overall corn carryout is actually up 17 mbu this month to just over 1.8 billion bushels. Dec stocks figure does come in below estimates and right in line with last year, however. In world S&D, global 2015/16 carryin falls a million tonnes while production drops a full 6 MMT, partly thanks to the U.S. crop loss but mostly due to a massive 4 MMT cut in South Africa (to just 8 MMT). Overall world ending stocks down 3 MMT.
Beans: U.S. planted acreage falls by half a million acres while harvested area loses 600k ac, and yields lose 0.3 bpa as well; production is down 51 mbu in total. On the demand side, exports lose 25 mbu but that still leads to a 25 mbu cut in carryout overall (to 440 mbu), against trade expectations for a steady figure there. World carryin down slightly for 2015/16 while production loses 1.1 MMT (due to the U.S. loss); increased demand contributes even more to the 3.3 MMT global ending stocks drop due to higher usage rates in Argentina and China.
Wheat: U.S. wheat imports down 5 mbu with seed usage down 6 mbu; the bulk of the carryout change (up 30 mbu to a robust 941 mbu thus month) comes from a 30 mbu reduction in feed demand. Global '15/16 production up slightly due to increases in Pakistan and Russia, with lower usage also contributing to an overall carryout up 2.2 MMT this month.
Results: massive (near-record) fund-shorted market looking for any reason to rally, and found it at least temporarily. U.S. and world S&D's still plenty over-supplied, but respite comes this month at least...
