Develop and use proper soccer technique to shoot the ball when under pressure
HINTS:
Take a moment to thank parents for their support, commitment, and continued encouragement of your players. Activity 1- “Coach’s W.U” Duration: 10 MIN
Warmups:
Hold a quick team meeting to welcome players to practice and tell them the focus tonight will be on shooting under pressure. Begin by dividing the group into even teams who will line up behind the goal. Spread the soccer balls out on the other side of the grid. On the coach’s command, players run out and perform foot skills (toe taps, windshield wipers, pull-back, etc.) Choose one skill for each round. Once completed players dribble back and encounter light pressure from the coach and then score a goal. When they score the next player can go. If they miss they retrieve the ball and try again.
Coach’s Warm-Up
COACHING DEMONSTRATION Have players line up at well spaced cones on one of the sidelines and show players how to dribble the ball into a shooting position. Coaching points should include: using the laces, keeping the plant foot beside the ball, and hips pointed toward the target. Begin by having players line up 20 yards away facing the goal. Have each player dribble ten yards (where a cone is placed) and then shoot the ball into the goal using proper technique. Discourage the use of the toe. Repeat several times. Offer praise and reinforce the good habits you are observing. Activity 2- SHEEP IN A PEN
Duration: 8 MIN
Players are divided into two teams and line up at the same position as the warm up. Players are each assigned a number. (In this way, there is a number 1 on one team and a number 1 on the opposing team and so on and so forth.) The coach stands behind the goal and throws a ball out into the field calling out a number. Players assigned that number run out. The first player to get to the ball first is the offensive player who then tries to shoot on goal. The defensive player applies pressure trying to stop the goal from being scored. Repeat several times so all players get a chance to participate. The coach may want to send out two players from both teams for an added dimension. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good habits. Activity 3- GET OUT OF HERE!
Duration: 8 MIN
Create a small-sided field with small goals on each end. Divide the players into two teams. Two players are on the field while the other two are off. They are playing 2v2 against opponents divided the same way. When the ball goes out of bounds or there is a goal scored the coach says, “Get Out of Here!” and a new pair runs on. Winner stays or the team who did not touch the ball last before it went out of bounds stays. Repeat a time or two and shuffle partners. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good shooting skills. REPEAT COACHING DEMONSTRATION Use this to check for players’ understanding, to measure growth and to target players who may need additional help. Activity 4- SMALL SIDED GAME 4 v 4
(Keep the focus on tonight’s objectives!)
Duration: 20 MIN
End practice with a short team meeting to review the session objectives and highlight the good things seen and observed.
