Objectives:

Develop and use proper soccer technique to pass the ball

HINTS:

Keep focused on what is right, rather than improving what is wrong. The soccer field needs to be a safe place for players to struggle and grow. Eighty percent of your comments should be encouragement and praise while twenty percent might be correction and redirection. Activity 1- “3-2-1 DRILLS”

Warmups:

Duration: 10 MIN

Hold a quick team meeting to welcome players to practice and tell them the focus tonight will be on passing the ball. Have players dribble around the field. On your call, “3-2-1,” players must stop and place their dominate foot on top of the ball. Have players do 10 toe-taps and then dribble away. Do a series of repetitions with each. Add pull-backs, cuts, and turns as players grow more comfortable.

COACHING DEMONSTRATION Have players line up at well spaced cones on one of the sidelines and show players how to position their body to pass the ball. Coaching points should include: using the inside of the foot to push pass the ball in the desired direction, keeping the plant foot beside the ball, and hips pointed toward the target. Begin by having players push pass the ball without the ball (ghost pass). Repeat several times. Then have players pass you a ball one at a time as you move down the line. Offer praise and reinforce the good habits you are observing. Activity 2- COCONUT SHY

Duration: 8 MIN

Players are divided into groups of two. One player places a ball on top of a soccer disc and stands behind it. (Their job is to reset the ball when it is knocked off the disc.) The partner stands 3- 5 yards away and attempts to push pass a second ball into the first knocking it off the disc. Players switch positions after one partner knocks the coconut off the tree. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good passing skills. Activity 3- SOCCER BOWLING

Duration: 8 MIN

Have players line up at well spaced cones on one of the sidelines. Players must stand and execute a strong push pass to knock over as many “pins" (cones) as possible. A straight line is easiest while a normal ten pin set up could be utilized for more proficient passers. It is recommended that several “lanes” be set up so more players can go at a time. Use parent volunteers to reset “pins.” Players could also dribble into a pass as well. Repeat several times. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good passing skills. REPEAT COACHING DEMONSTRATION Use this to check for players’ understanding, to measure growth and to target players who may need additional help. Activity 4- SMALL SIDED GAME 4 v 4

(Keep the focus on tonight’s objectives!)

Duration: 20 MIN

End practice with a short team meeting to review the session objectives and highlight the good things seen and observed.
