Objectives:

 

Develop and use proper soccer technique to change direction using a cut or type kind of turn Develop an awareness of space on the soccer field

HINTS:

Keep players engaged as many minutes as possible. Minimize lengthy directions and maximize time moving with the ball. Activity 1- Warm Up Fun

Warmups:

Duration: 10 MIN

Hold a quick team meeting to welcome players to practice and tell them the focus tonight will be on dribbling, changing direction, and moving into space. Then ask players to line up at a cone on one sideline. (An equal number of cones are placed on the opposing sideline.) Players all get to pick a warm-up activity for the whole group to do. (e.g. jog, gallop, sprint, skip, shuffle side-to-side, etc.) Players “run” from one cone on one sideline to the matching cone on the opposing sideline.

Monster

COACHING DEMONSTRATION Have players line up at well spaced cones on one of the sidelines and show players how to dribble into space. Coaching points should include: keeping the ball close, keeping your head up, and finding space where others are not. Begin by having players dribble-walk or jog slowly with the ball. Tell players they may dribble anywhere within the field of play, but must stay within the boundaries of the field. Players should dribble around the field and avoid each other. Offer praise and reinforce the good habits you are observing. Activity 2- MONSTER

Duration: 8 MIN

Tell players they may dribble anywhere within the field of play, but must stay within the boundaries of the field. The coach is the monster. Players should avoid the monster and dribble into space where the monster is not. Additional monsters may be added to reduce space on the field. This can be done by recruiting parent volunteers or asking other players to assist. The goal is to force players to dribble into space. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good dribbling skills and an awareness of space. Activity 3- BIG BAD BEAR

Duration: 8 MIN

The coach is the “Big Bad Bear” and the bear must try to capture the players. The players dribble around the area while the bear tries to capture them. The bear cannot capture the players if they hide in the cave. The players can only stay in the cave for 10 seconds and must go to the other cave to avoid capture. If a player is captured they become a Bear and help the Big Bad Bear capture the remaining players. Last player to be captured is the winner. REPEAT COACHING DEMONSTRATION Use this to check for players’ understanding, to measure growth and to target players who may need additional help. Activity 4- SMALL SIDED GAME 4 v 4

(Keep the focus on tonight’s objectives!)

Duration: 20 MIN

End practice with a short team meeting to review the session objectives and highlight the good things seen and observed.
