Wildcats back on road to face oldest Lone Star Conference rival for last time COMMERCE – The oldest rivalry in the Lone Star Conference will play itself out Saturday at Memorial Stadium when the ACU Wildcats hook up with the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce for the 69th and possibly final time. The Wildcats lead the all-time series against Commerce 39-27-1 (2007 win by ACU was vacated because of NCAA rules violations) and has won the last two meetings. The series dates back to 1922 (ACU’s fourth season of intercollegiate football) and was played continuously from 1972-2005. Perhaps the most memorable game in the series came in 2009 when the Wildcats beat the Lions, 20-14 in overtime, when Drew Cuffee returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown on the first play of overtime at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. After six straight trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs, the Wildcats are playing for a winning season and perhaps a spot in the Lower Kanza Bowl in Topeka, Kan. ACU is 4-4 on the season and 2-4 in the LSC and needs to win out to secure a sixth straight season with at least seven wins. Senior quarterback Mitchell Gale is also closing in on more LSC and ACU history as he needs just 819 yards over the final three games to become only the second LSC player in history (along with former ACU great Billy Malone) to pass for at least 12,000 yards in his career. He needs just 832 yards to pass Malone (12,012 yards from 2005-08) as the all-time leading passer in both LSC and ACU history.
ACU AT TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE When: Saturday, Oct. 27 Time: 2 p.m. Where: Commerce Stadium: Memorial Stadium (7,500 / FieldTurf) Radio: Mix 92.5 FM Series: ACU leads 39-27-1 Last week: • ACU lost to Midwestern State, 35-31 • A&M-Commerce lost to Angelo St., 17-16 Last meeting: • ACU 40, Texas A&M-Commerce 28 (Oct. 29, 2011 / Abilene)
The Wildcats enter Saturday’s contest riding their first two-game losing streak since they lost back-to-back games Oct. 17 and Oct. 24, 2009, when they lost at home to West Texas A&M (31-21) and at Tarleton State (13-6), respectively. The Lions have won just once in seven outings (knocking off Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sept. 29), but played well last week against Angelo State. Commerce led 13-0 at halftime, but saw the Rams storm back to take a 17-16 win, completing the comeback with a late fourth-quarter field goal to seal the win over the upset-minded Lions.

ACU POLL NOTES • Since the AFCA poll debuted in 2000, 11 teams have spent at least one week ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation: Abilene Christian, Delta State, Central Washington, Grand Valley State, Minnesota-Duluth, North Alabama, North Dakota, Northwest Missouri State, Pittsburg State, Saginaw Valley State, Colorado State-Pueblo and Valdosta State. • The Wildcats were ranked in the AFCA poll for 80 straight weeks from Sept. 26, 2006, through Sept. 17, 2012, but dropped out on Sept. 24, 2012, after a loss to Angelo State.
ACU senior quarterback Mitchell Gale is on the verge of setting virtually every meaningful passing record in both LSC and ACU history. He needs just 819 passing yards to hit 12,000 for his career, and will need just 13 more after that to become the all-time leading passer in LSC and ACU history. Here’s how Gale has fared game-by-game in his career:

Ken Collums, the architect of Abilene Christian University’s record-setting offense since 2005, is the 19th head football coach in ACU history. ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley made the announcement Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, ending a week-long search process that was set off on Dec. 16 when former head coach Chris Thomsen resigned to take a job as an assistant coach at Arizona State University. Collums – who has never been a head coach – just completed his seventh season as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator and believes now is the right time to step into the head coaches’ role. “I’m honored and excited to be the head football coach at ACU,” he said. “I have the unique perspective to have been part of laying the foundation of this program seven years ago, and I’ve been able to see it grow and develop into what it is today. This is truly a special place and a special situation, and I’m ready to be the head coach and keep this program moving forward.” Collums – the FootballScoop.com D2 Coordinator of the Year in 2010 – has presided over and called the plays for some of the most dominant offensive units in NCAA Division II history. Over the last seven seasons, the Wildcats have averaged 468.4 yards of offense and 39 points per game, while achieving near perfect balance in run-pass play selection. In the 82 games the Wildcats have played since 2005, they've run the ball 2,874 times and thrown it 2,857 times while gaining 38,412 yards in those games Since he re-joined the ACU coaching staff prior to the 2005 season, Collums’ offenses have ranked among the best in the nation. The Wildcats have ranked in the top seven in NCAA Division II football in total offense five times in the last seven years, including first in 2008, second in 2007, third in 2011 and fourth in 2006. The pass offense has ranked third twice and sixth twice, and the rushing offense has ranked as ninth in the nation (2008). The Wildcats’ scoring offense under Collums has ranked first in both 2007 and 2008 (when ACU scored a combined 1,267 points in 25 games), second in 1010 and sixth in 2006. Under Thomsen and Collums, “ball security” became one of the catch phrases surrounding the program, and the Wildcats have turned the ball over only 122 times in seven seasons, including just eight times in 2010 and nine in 2006. In his 82 games as the Wildcats' offensive coordinator, ACU has scored between 30 and 39 points in 18 games, between 40-49 points 22 times, between 50-59 points 14 times, between 60-69 points three times, 70-79 points twice and hit 93 in a 2008 NCAA Division II playoff game against West Texas A&M. In 2007 and 208, Collums called the plays for one of the greatest offensive units in the history of college football. Under his guidance, ACU scored 1,267 points (50.7 ppg) and racked up 13,772 yards of total offense (550.9 ypg) in the 25 games covering those two seasons and ACU went 21-4 in those games, won the Lone Star Conference title in 2008 and saw Bernard Scott win the Harlon Hill Award as the top player in NCAA Division II football and Sam Collins win the Gene Upshaw Award as the top lineman in NCAA Division II football. In the greatest offensive game in LSC and ACU history, Collums led ACU to 93 points in a 93-68 win over West Texas A&M in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division II playoffs. The Wildcats posted a school-record 810 yards of total offense and scored touchdowns on 13 of 15 possessions on their way to a remarkable 25-point win over the Buffaloes. ACU’s offense set 29 NCAA Division II single-game, NCAA Division II playoff single-game, LSC and ACU records in the record-setting rout. In 2007, ACU became the first program in the history of NCAA football to boast a 3,500-yard passer (Billy Malone), 2,000-yard rusher (Bernard Scott) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Johnny Knox and Jerale Badon) in the same season. In fact, ACU’s offense in

2008 set or tied or was part of 78 NCAA, LSC or Wildcat single-game, season or career records. “When I look back at our offense over the last seven years, the No. 1 thing I’m proud of is our consistency,” Collums said. “I tell our guys all the time that it doesn't matter what we do – whether we’re throwing it or running it – we have to protect the ball. And at times over those seven years we have been the best at protecting the ball. And that comes from total buy-in from players, and that makes me proud because that lets me know that they're buying into what we’re telling them. “All of that – ALL of that – starts with one word, and that’s ‘trust’,” Collums continued. “It starts with the head coach trusting his staff to let them do what needs to be done, and that funnels down to the players. Chris (Thomsen) had trust in me and the rest of the offensive staff to allow us to do what needed to be done. And once you have that trust, you’re able to call plays and feel good about them, no matter the situation.” But for Collums and Mosley, the football program is about more than wins and losses, yards gained and points scored. When Thomsen was hired as the head coach in 2005 and brought his brother-in-law (Collums) with him as the offensive coordinator, the two charted an intentional course that would lead them to the belief that turning out men of character ranked as high on their priority list as did winning games. A few years ago, the football team began taking a weekend break during summer two-a-days and either attending a PromiseKeepers event or, as it has done the last three years, hosting its own weekend retreat where nothing about football is mentioned, only how to make ACU’s players men of real character. And each Friday night during the season the team meets to listen to speakers talk about real-life experiences that have nothing to do with the game on the field. “I wholeheartedly believe in what we do here and the
product we put out,” Collums said. “We win games and we take these young men and develop them and help them grow into men of impact who will positively influence their future families and, ultimately, society.” Collums was ACU’s quarterbacks / wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator from 1996-99 before returning to his alma mater, Central Arkansas, prior to the 2000 season. While coaching at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears to some of the greatest offensive seasons in school history. Collums coached an offensive attack that averaged 300 yards passing per game in three of his last four seasons at UCA. The Bears were the nation’s top passing team in 2001, averaging 373 yards per game. In 2002 – Collums’ first year as offensive coordinator – the Bears were No. 8 nationally in points per game (37.5), No. 3 in passing yards per game (310.5) and No. 9 in total offense (446 yards per game). In 2004, UCA featured a balanced attack that racked up 38 points per game (No. 14), 477.7 yards per game (No. 6), 269 passing yards per game (No. 19) and 208.5 rushing yards per game (No. 26). As a freshman quarterback at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears to the 1991 NAIA national championship. In four seasons as the starter, he directed his team to a combined record of 30-8-3. Collums graduated from Central Arkansas in 1995 with a bachelor of science in kinesiology. He received his master’s in kinesiology from Central Arkansas in 1998. A native of Vernon, Collums played for the Vernon Lions of former coach Leo Brittain, leading his team to a 29-2-1 record in his final two seasons as the starting quarterback. Collums led Vernon to the Class 3A state title in 1990. Collums and his wife, Robyn, have two children, a daughter, Anna, and a son, Layne.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME ONE #10 ACU 51, MCMURRY 0 Saturday, Sept. 1 • Abilene, Texas
Sophomore end Richardson’s six sacks lead No. 10 Wildcats to 51-0 victory over War Hawks ABILENE – Sophomore defensive end Nick Richardson had six of his team's nine sacks as 10th-ranked Abilene Christian University introduced McMurry University to NCAA Division II with a 51-0 win in both teams' season opener Saturday night in Shotwell Stadium. Richardson’s six sacks tied the ACU record set by James Henderson in 1997, and led a Wildcat defense that held McMurry to 301 total yards, all but 12 yards of it through the air, broke up six passes and recovered a fumble. Warhawk quarterback Jake Mullin completed 37 of 59 passes for 289 yards, and was intercepted once. His counterpart, pre-season NCAA Division II Player of the Year Mitchell Gale, completed 19 of 28 passes for 290 yards and one TD in three quarters of play. Both teams played a scoreless first quarter before a crowd of 11,337, but ACU scored on seven straight possessions to start the second quarter. Charcandrick West’s 13-yard run, redshirt freshman Travis Tarver’s 2-yard dive and a 9-yard pass from quarterback Gale to wide receiver Taylor Gabriel powered the Wildcats to a 21-0 halftime lead. ACU opened the second-half scoring with a 25-yard field goal from Morgan Lineberry. The Wildcats’ next drive was a short one, thanks to McMurry turning the ball over on downs at its own 10-yard line. Two plays later, Gabriel scored on a 7-yard end-around. ACU scored on its next drive when Marcel Threat ran 12 yards for a TD, and tacked on another TD with Tarver's 5-yard run at the end of the third quarter. Threat, a sophomore transfer from Central Arkansas, scored his second rushing TD with a 12-yarder in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats rolled up 461 yards of offense, helped by Gabriel’s seven catches for 108 yards and Threat's 88 yards of rushing. Tarver caught two passes for 54 yards and ran nine times for 38 yards. Darian Hogg had four catches for 50 yards. ACU’s 51 was the second most McMurry War Hawks points scored by the Wildcats in a season-opener since they beat McMurry 53-20 in 1971, and their first shutout since a 21-0 blanking of Eastern New Mexico in 2006. McMurry and ACU last played 41 years ago, but the cross-town #10 ACU Wildcats rivalry featured 39 games from 1930-71, with the Wildcats holding a 24-15 edge. The War Hawks were playing their first year in Division II, while the Wildcats are starting their last before a move in 2013 to the Division I FCS-affiliated Southland Conference. The Wildcats – who won their fifth straight season-opener – host longtime Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville next Saturday at 6 p.m.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME TWO #24 TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE 16, #9 ACU 13 Saturday, Sept. 8 • Abilene, Texas
ACU offense can’t get untracked as No. 9 Wildcats drop LSC opener to No. 24 Javelinas, 16-13 ABILENE – Matt Stoll kicked three field goals, Nate Poppell threw for 372 yards and defensive-minded Texas A&M-Kingsville held off No. 9 Abilene Christian University, 16-13, on Saturday night at Shotwell Stadium. The No. 24 Javelinas improved to 2-0 on the season, and 1-0 in the Lone Star Conference South Division, while ACU fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in the LSC. The win ended ACU's eight-year winning streak in the 47-year series, which Kingsville dominated from 1984-2003, and snapped the Wildcats' 12-game regular season home winning streak. Kingsville’s fierce defense held preseason NCAA Division II player of the year Mitchell Gale to his lowest output in three years, and broke a stretch of 23 straight games in which he had thrown a touchdown. Gale, a senior, completed 13 of 31 passes for 137 yards. After scoring 51 points in its season-opener last week against McMurry, ACU could only muster 11 first downs and 224 yards of offense against the Javelinas. ACU held the Javelinas’ vaunted running game to only 48 yards – and 1,000-yard rusher Jonathan Woodson to 27 yards – but had no answer for Poppell, who completed 33 of 50 passes and one TD. Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel’s second 7-yard end-around scoring run in as many weeks staked the Wildcats to a 6-0 lead on the last play of the first quarter. Kingsville answered back when Nate Poppell threw a 22-yard TD pass to Robert Armstrong on the first drive of the second quarter. The Javelinas padded their lead to 10-6 when Matt Stoll kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:07 left in the first half. Kingsville opened the third quarter with a 16-play drive that Stoll capped
with a 29-yard field goal and upped the Javelina advantage to 13-6. Stoll’s third field goal of the game, with 14:57 left in the fourth quarter, gave his team a 16-6 advantage. But on the first play of the ensuing drive, ACU wide receiver #24 A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Darrell Cantu-Harkless ran 65 yards for a TD to pull his team to 16-13. Stoll missed a 9-yard field goal on Kingsville’s next possession, and the Wildcats took over. ACU could get no closer than the Javelina 33-yard line on its drive, and Morgan Lineberry’s 51-yard field goal attempt missed #9 ACU Wildcats with 7:05 remaining. ACU’s last-chance drive began after being pinned on its 6-yard line by Javelina punter Angel Millan. But on a fourth-down-and-7, Kingsville’s defense rose to the occasion again, sacking Gale on his own 12 with 1:11 remaining. Harkless was the Wildcats’ leading rusher with 70 yards, and top receiver with four catches for 36 yards. The Wildcats play rival Tarleton State next Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second annual Lone Star Football Festival in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME THREE #20 ACU 34, TARLETON STATE 31 Saturday, Sept. 15 • Cowboys Stadium • Arlington, Texas
Second-half rally sends No. 20 Wildcats to big Lone Star conference win over Tarleton State ARLINGTON – At halftime, deep inside the bowels of Cowboys Stadium, ACU head coach Ken Collums stood in front of his team and told them what was about to transpire in the second half against Tarleton State. “I told them that we were going to go up and down the field on them offensively and that our defense was going to get stops,” Collums said. Pretty bold talk from a coach who had just watched his team sputter throughout the first half and was trailing 20-10 at the break. The defense had been on the field for almost 17 minutes and had allowed 327 yards, while the offense once again struggled and had just 147 yards in the first 30 minutes. But the Wildcats’ first-year head coach turned out to be prophetic as he watched his team completely turn around its fortunes and perhaps save its season with a 34-31 win over the Texans in the Lone Star Football Festival. The 20th-ranked Wildcats improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference with the win, while the Texans fall to 1-1 overall and in the LSC. The Wildcats will be back in action next Saturday in San Angelo when they take on Angelo State at 6 p.m. “I don't want to stand here and say, ‘I told you so, but ...,’ “ Collums said as his voice trailed off in a jubilant post-game locker room. “I’m so proud of you guys because we could have folded it up, but we didn’t. I know this, this team is tough and we’re only going to get better.” After completing just 12 of 22 passes for 122 yards in the first half, ACU senior quarterback Mitchell Gale reverted to his normal self in the game’s final 30 minutes by completing 15 of 20 passes for 157 yards and two scores, both to junior wideout Taylor Gabriel. Trailing 20-10 at the break, ACU took its second possession of the third quarter 36 yards on five plays, taking just 1:56 off the clock before freshman running back Travis Tarver scored on a 7-yard run to cut the TSU lead to 20-17. The short field was set up by ACU wide receiver Darian Hogg, who got a hand on Isaac Arellano’s punt, the first in a series of game-changing plays by several different Wildcats in the second half. After Tarleton went three-and-out on its next series, Gabriel made his first big play of the second half with a 54-yard punt return down to the TSU 15. Despite a 10-yard penalty on ACU at the end of the run, the Wildcats still had great field position, and they took advantage of it again.
ACU needed just four plays and 2 minutes, 10 seconds to cover the 25 yards, scoring on a 6-yard pass from Gale to Gabriel to give the Wildcats a 24-20 lead with 4:03 to play in the third quarter. The teams traded field goals by Tarleton State Texans Morgan Lineberry and Blake Barnes to make it a 27-23 ACU lead with 9:35 left in the game before ACU began what would turn out to be the game-clinching drive. The Wildcats methodically moved 79 yards in 14 plays and took 6:23 off the clock before scoring on a #20 ACU Wildcats 16-yard pass from Gale to Gabriel. The Wildcats were 4 for 4 on thirddown plays on the drive, converting a third-and-10 on the drive's third play with a 14-yard pass from Gale to Hogg. On third-and-2 from the TSU 42, Gale scrambled up the middle for three yards. On third-and-18 from the 47, Gale lofted a deep pass to DeMarcus Thompson, who hauled it in on the sideline for a first down at the TSU 13-yard line. After a rush for no gain and a sack of Gale back to the 16-yard line, Gale found Taylor over the middle and let him go to work. Gabriel tried to cut back, but slipped and looked as if he were going to go down short of the goal line. But he dropped his hand down to keep his balance, popped up and leapt into the end zone for a 34-23 ACU lead with 3:12 to play. Tarleton came right back down the field, moving 85 yards on 10 plays to an Aaron Doyle 1-yard touchdown run with 1:02 to play. Doyle then completed a 2-point conversion pass to Will McLane to make it 34-31 and setting up an onside kick. But ACU’s Thor Woerner recovered the kick – his second big recovery on a kickoff in the game – and ACU was able to run the clock out on a big come-frombehind win.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME FOUR ANGELO STATE 28, #19 ACU 23 Saturday, Sept. 22 • San Angelo, Texas
Rams put the wraps on Wildcats’ offense as Angelo State pulls off 28-23 win over #19 ACU SAN ANGELO – Blake Hamblin ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Angelo State University to a 28-23 upset win Saturday night over No. 19 Abilene Christian University in San Angelo Stadium. ACU (2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Lone Star Conference) took a first-quarter 9-0 lead, but Angelo State made life difficult for the Wildcats the rest of the half, sacking ACU quarterback Mitchell Gale seven times and holding his teammates to four yards rushing. The Rams (2-2 overall, 1-0 in the LSC) limited ACU to 16 yards on the ground for the game. Hamblin completed 33 of 48 passes for 274 yards. He was sacked three times and intercepted twice, and Angelo State had 14 penalties for 152 yards, but the Rams held the ball for nearly twice as much time as the Wildcats. ACU converted only one of 13 third-down possessions in the game. The Wildcats marched to their only TD of the first half on their opening drive when quarterback Mitchell Gale connected with wide receiver Demarcus Thompson on a 33-yard touchdown pass. Thompson's special teams play gave the ball right back to the Wildcats when he blocked Joseph Pickett's punt and Jaime Walker recovered at the Ram's 15-yard line. Morgan Lineberry kicked a 32-yard field goal to put his team up 9-0 with 9:21 left. Angelo State got on the scoreboard when Hamblin's 1-yard TD run closed the ACU margin to 9-7, a drive set up by a 36-yard end-around run by wide receiver Dakarai Pecikonis. Morgan Lineberry missed a 42-yard field goal with 10:38 left in the second quarter. Angelo State pulled ahead of the Wildcats when Donavan Roberts’ 8-yard run around left end with 4:14 left put the Rams on top, 14-9. Hamblin scored his second TD of the game with 1:50 left in the third quarter, running untouched around left end for 3 yards, upping the Ram lead to 21-9. ACU took advantage of some Angelo State mistakes at the end of the third quarter to begin what looked like a promising rally. With the ball on his own 23-yard line, Gale's deep incomplete pass to wide receiver Darian Hogg drew a 15-yard interference and a 15-yard personal foul penalty from the Rams, setting up the Wildats on the ASU 47. Four plays later at the top of the fourth
quarter, Gale found freshman fullback Elton Chrochran open over the middle for a 33-yard scoring pass. The Rams answered right back when Joey Knight caught a 13-yard pass from Hamblin, broke a tackle and scored to put ASU further ahead, #19 ACU Wildcats 28-16, with 9:11 left. Gale and the ACU offense responded again on the next drive, pulling the Wildcats to within five points, 28-23, with the senior quarterback finding Taylor Gabriel wide open in the end zone for a 17Angelo State Rams yard TD pass with 7:55 left. ACU forced the Rams to punt, but turned the ball over on downs at their own 32 with 4:22 left. ASU couldn't advance the ball and Jarrod Martin's 42-yard field goal try went awry when the Rams were whistled for a false start with 2:50 remaining. On fourth and 12 from the Wildcat 34-yard line, linebacker Thor Woerner sniffed out a trick play from the Rams and tackled Samir Baker for a loss at the ACU 39. With 2:43 left, Gale then began what looked like a possible decisive drive but it ended two plays later when his first-down pass at the Ram 45-yard line deflected off freshman Travis Tarver and was intercepted by ASU's Ryan Clapsaddle. Gale completed 14 of 42 passes for 308 yards and three TDs. Gabriel, a wide receiver, was the Wildcats' leading rusher with 22 yards. Thompson caught five passes for 131 yards, Darrell Cantu-Harkless caught five for 69 yards and Gabriel had four for 33 yards. L.B. Suggs led ACU with 10 tackles.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME FIVE ACU 34, DELTA STATE 28 Thursday, Sept. 27 • Cleveland, Miss.
Defense comes up with three big stands as Wildcats come away with 34-28 road victory CLEVELAND, Miss. – Abilene Christian University’s defense came up with three huge fourth-down stops Thursday night and Mitchell Gale threw three touchdown passes as the Wildcats rebounded with a big 34-28 win over Delta State at McCool Stadium. The win pushes the Wildcats to 3-2 on the season, while the Statesmen fall to 1-3. The Wildcats will be back home in Abilene next Saturday (Oct. 6) as they host Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference contest at 6 p.m. Trailing by six points, Delta State got the football back at its own 24-yard line with 1:58 left in the game. DSU quarterback Trevor Wooden completed a 24-yard pass to Lavon Downs on first down and then hit Kevin Jackson for 40 yards to get the ball to the ACU 12-yard line with less than one minute to play. Wooden threw incomplete on first down and then ran for five yards on second down to bring up third down. DSU was whistled for a false start from the 7-yard line – its 15th penalty of the night – to set the ball back to the 12-yard line. Wooden threw incomplete on third down to set up fourth down with less than 30 seconds to play. Rolling right with a full field in front of him, Wooden instead chose to throw and he threw it out of the back of the end zone to give the Wildcats the ball back and the chance to snap the ball one last time in the victory formation. On Delta State’s previous fourth-down drive, Wooden was stopped on fourth-and-four from the ACU 37, turning the ball back over to the Wildcats. Near the end of the first half, the Wildcats – leading 24-21– got a goal-line
stand to keep the Statesmen out of the end zone. Ryan Smith stoned Brant Botill at the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal. Those three stands saved points, and the game for the Wildcats. ACU Wildcats Gale threw touchdown passes of 6 yards to Charcandrick West, 4 yards to DeMarcus Thompson, and 28 yards to Taylor Gabriel, while West added a 2-yard touchdown run and Morgan Lineberry two field goals as ACU bounced back from a disappointing 28-23 loss last week at Delta State Statesmen Angelo State. Gale finished the night 26 of 37 for 246 yards and three touchdowns, while Gabriel caught four passes for 65 yards and the one score. West – who hadn’t played since the first quarter of the game against Tarleton State on Sept. 15 – played through a strained groin and finished with 59 yards rushing on 19 carries.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME SIX ACU 59, EASTERN NEW MEXICO 17 Saturday, Oct. 6 • Abilene, Texas
Wildcats overpower Greyhounds, 59-17, behind Stone’s kickoff return, Gale’s 4 touchdown passes ABILENE – Mitchell Gale threw four touchdown passes and Abilene Christian University scored on three returns Saturday night to power the Wildcats to a 59-17 win over Eastern New Mexico University in Shotwell Stadium. The Wildcats, 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Lone Star Conference South Division, won their second consecutive game and seventh in a row over the Greyhounds (2-4 overall and 1-3 in the LSC) and 12th in 14 years. The Wildcats travel to Canyon to play longtime rival West Texas A&M next Saturday at 6 p.m. The defense gave up 244 rushing yards to ENMU's option-oriented offense, but intercepted Wesley Wood three times, returning two of them for touchdowns. ACU senior linebacker Mike Wallace had one of them, a 48-yarder that was his fifth pick in the past three games. Gale, a senior, completed 18 of 28 passes for 252 yards in only three quarters of play, leading his team to its most points since a season-opening 51-0 shutout of McMurry University. The Wildcats outgained the Greyhounds, 397 yards to 312. Cade Stone began the TD parade early, running the opening kickoff back 92 yards for a TD and a 7-0 ACU lead. When the Wildcats muffed the Greyhounds’ opening-drive punt, Wesley Wood answered for his team three plays later with a 4-yard TD run, tying the score. ACU regained the lead, 14-7, when Darrell Cantu-Harkless caught a pass from Gale, slipped out of a tackle at the 20-yard line and finished off a 39-yard scoring play with 3:51 left in the first quarter. The Wildcats went 99 yards for their next score, a 12-play drive capped by Gale's 12-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Darian Hogg at the 12:30 mark. On ENMU's next possession, a diving interception by freshman cornerback Tyler Chapa at the Greyhounds’ 44-yard line gave the ball back to ACU, which converted the turnover into more points when Morgan Lineberry kicked a 29-yard field goal. Return yards again stymied the Greyhounds when Wallace’s interception
of Wood covered nearly half of the field, upping ACU's lead to 31-7. Eastern tacked on a 30-yard field goal by Baca with three seconds left, shortening the first-half deficit to 31-10. ACU scored three times in the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds third quarter, increasing its lead to 38-10 on its opening drive when Charcandrick West caught a 21-yard TD pass from Gale. Defensive lineman Melvin Shead intercepted a Wood pass on the Greyhound 7-yard line and returned it for a TD, and Hogg caught his second scoring ACU Wildcats pass of the game, an 8-yarder, with 14 seconds left. ENMU tacked on points with 8:40 remaining in the game when Wood ran 5 yards for a TD to reduce the margin to 52-17, but ACU answered right back. Alternating junior John David Baker at quarterback and freshman wide receiver Caleb Stone in the Wildcat formation, ACU marched 56 yards for its eighth and final TD of the game, with sophomore Marcel Threat running 5 yards for the closing score. Woods was the game’s leading rusher, running 27 times for 128 yards and two TDs. He completed nine of 13 passs for 68 yards. ACU was led in rushing by Threat’s 70 yards on 12 carries, and Gabriel’s eight catches for 112 yards. Cantu-Harkless had four catches for 80 yards.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME SEVEN #14 WEST TEXAS A&M 36, ACU 0 Saturday, Oct. 13 • Canyon, Texas
#20 Buffaloes dominate Wildcats, 36-0, in possible final series meeting between longtime rivals CANYON – West Texas A&M started the series against ACU in 1921 with a shutout win in Canyon. They finished it Saturday night with another shutout at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. That 35-0 win over the Wildcats in 1921 was bookended Saturday night with a 36-0 trampling of the 2012 version of the Wildcats. In between those two games were several classics, including several since 2006 when the two teams became Lone Star Conference powers. Suffice to say, Saturday night's contest will not join the ranks of the series classics. No. 20 West Texas A&M dominated in every phase of the game as the Buffaloes put a 36-0 whipping on the Wildcats in a game that really wasn’t as close as the score might suggest. ACU will end the series against the Buffs holding a 28-18 edge, but the Buffaloes put their stamp on the final game with a dominating performance. WT quarterback Dustin Vaughn threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns, Khiry Robinson ran for 102 yards and the WT defense sacked ACU quarterback Mitchell Gale eight times as the Wildcats were shut out for the first time in exactly 11 years. The streak of 121 straight games in which the Wildcats had scored began after ACU was shut out 31-0 at Angelo State on Oct. 13, 2001. ACU was never in the game as WT scored on its first possession of the game on a 14-yard scoring pass from Vaughn to Trevor Hammargren to make it 7-0 with 6:10 left in the first quarter. Incredibly, that turned out to be the only points the Buffaloes would need. The game was 10-0 late in the second quarter before WT converted a thirdand-15 to the ACU 39-yard line with four seconds left in the half. Sergio Castillo came in and drilled a career-best 56-yard field goal to make it 13-0 at halftime. The Buffs got the ball to start the second half and drove 75 yards on eight
plays to a Robinson 4-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0 with 11:20 left in the third quarter. The backbreaker came less than three minutes later after ACU's offense went three-and-out when Vaughn hit backup wide receiver Jarrian Rhone with a 75-yard scoring ACU Wildcats strike to make it 27-0 with 8:37 left in the quarter. Gale was sacked for a safety near the end of the third quarter to make it 29-0. Vaughn hit Nathan Slaughter with a 31-yard touchdown pass with 11:53 left in the game and that was #20 West Texas A&M Buffaloes it for the scoring. The only drama remaining was whether or not ACU would be able to put points on the board. The Buffs' defense didn't allow it as they held ACU to a meager 210 yards of total offense, its worst output of the season. Gale was sacked eight times, the most he’s ever been sacked in a game in his career. Those lost yards (minus-46 yards) contributed to an ACU rushing game that accounted for just three yards on 28 carries. The Buffs, meanwhile, racked up 475 yards as they improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. ACU falls to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the LSC and will return home to Shotwell Stadium next Saturday at 2 p.m. to host Midwestern State in the annual Homecoming contest.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME • GAME EIGHT #12 MIDWESTERN STATE 35, ACU 31 Saturday, Oct. 20 • Abilene, Texas
No. 12 Midwestern State rallies late to knock off Wildcats, 35-31, in front of Homecoming crowd ABILENE – Quarterback Brandon Kelsey ran for 141 yards and four touchdowns, the last with 1:27 to play, to help 12th-ranked Midwestern State University overcome Abilene Christian University in an offensive shootout, 35-31, at Shotwell Stadium. Except for one crucial fourth-down play late in the contest, ACU had few answers for the Mustangs’ ground game, ranked fifth in the nation at 305.2 yards per game. MSU rolled up 389 yards rushing but had little success stopping the Wildcat passing attack. ACU quarterback Mitchell Gale completed 26 of 38 passes for 335 yards and three TDs. MSU improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the LSC South Division, while ACU fell to 5-3 overall and 2-4 in the LSC. Next Saturday, the Wildcats travel to Commerce to play Texas A&M-Commerce University for the 69th time, the opponent they have faced in football more than any other since 1919. Still stinging from being shutout 36-0 last Saturday for the first time in 11 years, ACU put on an inspired performance but fell short of its upset bid. Two of the top scoring offenses in the LSC showed the ACU Homecoming crowd their strengths in the first half, although ACU's defense forced two turnovers in the second quarter that helped the home team forge a slim lead in the tense, back-and-forth contest. ACU opened the game by moving the ball downfield with its running game, but scored on Gale's 10-yard pass to wide receiver Taylor Gabriel with 10:08 remaining. MSU answered right back when Kelsey ran 2 yards for a TD at the 6:10 mark. A 46-yard pass from Gale to Gabriel set up the next ACU score, a 3-yard TD run by Charcandrick West that put the Wildcats back on top, 14-7 with 2:49 left in the quarter. Kelsey's 30-yard run on the next drive knotted the game at 14-14 with half a minute left. Both teams misfired on their first drives of the second quarter. ACU's Morgan Lineberry missed a 49-yard field goal and MSU wide receiver Keiven Swanson fumbled the ball following a catch at the Wildcat 19-yard line. ACU junior placekicker Ryan Owens booted a 32-yard field goal with 4:04 left in the half, and the Wildcat defense held when defensive back Steven Ford
intercepted Kelsey’s pass at the ACU 45-yard line with 2:40 left. The Wildcats, however, could not capitalize on MSU's second turnover of the quarter – Owens’ 49-yard field goal attempt was blocked with just under a minute #12 Midwestern St. Mustangs remaining – but took a 17-14 lead into halftime. Kelsey drove the Mustangs to a TD in their first possession of the third quarter, scoring his third rushing TD of the game with a 6-yard run up the middle at the 9:23 mark. ACU countered with a scoring drive ACU Wildcats of its own, with Gale throwing a 20yard pass in the right corner of the end zone to Gabriel with 5:24 left, restoring ACU's lead at 24-21. But the Mustangs kicked their ground game into high gear, marching back downfield on an 82-yard drive, capped by LSC rushing leader Keidrick Johnson’s 8-yard scoring run that made the new score 28-24 with 1:48 left. An MSU punt by Greg Saldino – only his first of the day – pinned ACU on its 1-yard line with 11:08 left in the game. The Wildcats could only advance to their 8-yard line, and were forced to punt. The ACU defense held, stopping the Mustangs on a fourth-and-inches attempt at the Wildcat 44 with 7:50 left. Gale drove the Wildcats downfield, tossing a 5-yard TD pass to freshman tight end Jamie Walker with 5:43 left that helped ACU regain the lead, 31-28. MSU responded with a 12-yard drive that consumed 4:16 of time, capped by Kelsey's fourth rushing TD of the game with 1:27 left that restored the Mustang advantage, 35-31. ACU’s final-chance drive began on its own 35 following MSU's kickoff. It ended when a Gale pass on fourth and 4 at the Mustang 49 landed out of bounds.
