Purpose • Provide counts and measurements which can be used to forecast or estimate state and national YIELDS per acre • Provide counts and the weight of cotton left in the field after harvest • These data will be used to estimate HARVEST LOSS per acre
Purpose • Provide information about changes in ACREAGE intended for HARVEST that will result from fields being plowed up or destroyed after the June Agricultural Survey, but before harvest

Every Sample is Important • Accuracy Counts!! • Sample dimensions -> count area • 10 ft. count area + 3 ft. count area = 13 ft. x 3.2 feet (avg. row spacing from 2016) x 2 units per sample = 83.2 square feet per sample
• 83.2 / 43,560 (sq. ft. per acre) = .00191 acres per sample. • 6,600,000 planted acres • Each sample represents MANY acres • Small errors get amplified!
Pay attention to Details • Details, Details, Details • Everyone needs to follow procedures exactly the same way • Avoid careless mistakes • If you forget or are confused, refer to Interview’s Manual

Selecting a NEW FIELD (IM p.305) • If no cotton was planted in the sample field, an alternative field can be selected only if a new field (not originally listed on Table A) has been planted to upland cotton

Inaccessibles • If a Form A is inaccessible, do not make the field observation unless you know the operator personally, are sure no pesticides have been applied within the past three days and know for sure that the operator will allow you to use his field. – You must interview the farmer and complete Form A during the next visit to the sample field

Shipping Procedures to National Lab For cotton samples and E Forms: • Each enumerator has 6 UPS Return Service labels per sample • Each sample kit bundle has 6 Tyvek envelopes • Gleaning bundle has one large and one regular Tyvek envelope • Let office know if you need more supplies
Ship UPS cotton samples to the lab the same day that you work the field
Weighing Cotton • • • •
All cotton should be weighed at home Select good location, garage, draft free Weigh same day the fieldwork is done Be sure to ID each bag before leaving field
Weighing Cotton Each reading should be checked twice before recording on Form B
Place the seed cotton from the first 10 bolls (or less) from both Unit 1 and Unit 2 in one poly bag, immediately after weighing
This ensures that the cotton maintains the same moisture as it had when it was initially weighed
Place cotton from both units in one bag, do not send separately
After placing the cotton into the poly bag, press all of the air out of the bag
Secure the poly bags tightly so air cannot get in the bag, using only One orange rubber band
Each poly bag must be identified by attaching a completed Sample ID tag to the outside of the bag with a rubber band
DO NOT insert the ID tag inside the poly bag
Moisture from the cotton can be absorbed by the paper ID tag
The ID tag will have the Form B and Form E date broken out on two separate lines
Use Form B (or Form E) to complete ID tag, information given should match the corresponding B or E Form
Shipping Procedures • The poly bag is then placed in a Tyvek envelope • Multiple samples can be placed in one envelope
When a gleaning sample requires more than one poly bag, use an ID Tag with each poly bag
Remember to write on the Sample ID tag 1 of 2 and 2 of 2, etc.
When shipping the Post-Harvest Gleanings, put the Form E inside the Tyvek envelope, rather than shipping it separately
