HODGKIN’S LYMPHOMA AWARENESS DAY Sunday’s game against Rider has been designated Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Awareness Day, in honor of Pride Field Hockey alumnus and 2013 Hofstra graduate, Jillian Geysen. A four-year member (2009-2012) of the Hofstra team, Geysen was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma this past summer and is currently undergoing treatment in Connecticut. She will be recognized before the game and will serve as a Hofstra honorary coach on Sunday. In addition, tshirts and bracelets will be sold as a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Geysen Family to help defray the cost of Jillian’s medical treatment. VERSUS RIDER - Sunday’s game against the Broncs of Rider is the 23rd meeting between the two programs. - Rider leads the series, 12-10. The two schools met last season in Hempstead with the Broncs winning in overtime, 2-1. - The Broncs entered the week with a 7-5 record with a game against Monmouth on Friday before traveling to Hofstra. Rider has won four consecutive games including a 2-1 decision over Vermont last Sunday. The Broncs have wins over Missouri State (1-0), Appalachian State (3-1), Towson (2-1), Villanova (3-1), Lock Haven (2-1), Colgate (3-1) and Vermont. Their losses have come against St. Francis (PA) (3-2 in OT), Davidson (2-1), La Salle (3-2 in 2 OT), St, Joseph’s (1-0) and Drexel (4-0). - Rider is led in scoring by freshman Allison Baligian with six goals and 12 points. Senior Dezarae Fillmyer has added four goals and two assists while sophomore Carlie Spaeder has also tallied four goals. Sophomore Carlota Alsina has contributed two goals and a team-high three assists.
- Junior goalie Joelie Prettyman has a 1.50 goals against average and a .714 save percentage with 40 saves while playing in 11 games this year. HI MOM AND DAD - Sophomore midfielder Colby Hussong will see her mom and dad this Sunday -- on the Rider bench. Colby’s mom is Lori Hussong, the head coach of the Broncs of Rider while her dad, Dan, is the Broncs assistant coach. JONEL BOILEAU - Senior forward Jonel Boileau tallied a goal and an assist in the Drexel contest on October 10 to become the sixth player in school history to eclipse the 100-points plateau. Her goal in the contest was her 99th and 100th points while her assist on the winning goal gives her 101 career points. - Boileau, who has tallied 10 goals and five assists this season, now has 42 goals and 17 assists for 101 points in her career. Both her goals and points rank sixth on the Pride’s points and goals charts. - She recorded the seventh and eighth game-winning goals of her career with her overtime tally against Fairfield and the deciding goal against Maine. She had two in 2013, three in 2012 and one in 2011 to go with her two in 2014. SIMCA SCHOEN - CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Freshman defender Simca Schoen recorded her third goal of the season on October 10 at Drexel to break a 1-1 tie and give Hofstra a 2-1 victory over the Dragons. For her efforts, she was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. - She has a team-high nine assists to go with her three goals this season. - She tallied her second goal of the season against Northeastern on October 3. - She recorded two assists in the Pride’s 3-1 win at UMass Lowell on September 19. - Schoen was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for the period ending September 14. She assisted on goals by junior Charlotte Loehr and the game-winner by Boileau in Hofstra’s 21 overtime victory over Fairfield and added two more assists, on goals by Boileau and Marin Samper, in the Pride’s 4-0 win
over Vermont in the Catamount Classic. She was also named to the All-Catamount Classic team. - Schoen recorded a goal and an assist against Sacred Heart on September 5. MARIN SAMPER - Sophomore Claudia Marin Samper now has 11 goals, six assists and 28 points – all career-highs – this season. - She tallied three goals and one assist in the Hofstra games against Northeastern and Columbia on October 3 and 5. Marin Samper scored the Pride’s third goal in the 57th minute in the 4-3 CAA loss to #17 Northeastern on October 3. On Sunday, October 5 against Columbia, she scored Hofstra’s first two goals and assisted on the game-tying third goal by Charlotte Loehr for her five-point day. - She tallied two goals and one assist in the Pride’s 3-1 win at UMass Lowell. Marin Samper notched the game-winner and the insurance goals later in the first half. - Marin Samper was selected the Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Player of the Week for the period ending on September 14. Marin Samper tallied three goals and added one assist in the Pride’s three wins that week. - She was selected the Catamount Classic Most Valuable Player and selected to the All-Catamount Classic team. - She tallied two goals and added one assist in the Pride’s 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart at Yale on September 5. The two goals and five points were all career-highs while the one assist tied her previous best. STELLA SCHOEN - After missing seven games with an injury, sophomore Stella Schoen recorded here first goal of the season at Quinnipiac and her first assist of the year at Syracuse - Sophomore Stella Schoen scored the game-winning overtime goal in the Pride’s 4-3 victory over Columbia on Sunday. - She now has two goals and two assists in seven games this season. CARYS SWAN - Freshman Carys Swan won her first six consecutive starts for Hofstra this season. -Swan recorded a season-high eight saves in the Pride’s win over Maine. - Swan was named the Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Rookie of the Week for the period ending September 7. Swan led the Pride with two victories that week. Swan recorded three saves and picked up her second victory of the season in Hofstra’s 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart University in New Haven on September 5. SEVEN GOALS - After being blanked by Albany in the season opener, Hofstra tallied seven goals against Colgate on August 31. It was the most goals by a Hofstra team since a 7-2 win over Delaware in 2011. CAREER-HIGHS - Junior Lauren del Valle had career-highs of four goals and eight points against Colgate. - Sophomore forward Claudia Marin Samper scored two goals and an assist against Sacred Heart and UMass Lowell to post single game career-highs in goal and points and equal her assist mark. FIRST POINTS - Sophomore defender Leigh Maxwell-Smith recorded the first points of her college career with two assists at Colgate. - Sophomore Emily Gallagher also recorded her first collegiate point with an assist at Colgate. - Sophomore-transfer midfielder Colby Hussong, who came to Hofstra from Miami (OH) last January, recorded her first Hofstra point with an assist at Colgate. - Freshman Simca Schoen tallied her first collegiate goal and assist against Sacred Heart on September 5. ALL-CATAMOUNT CLASSIC TEAM - In addition to Claudia Marin Samper, who was named the Most Valuable Player, senior Jonel Boileau, and freshmen Simca Schoen and Carys Swan were named to the Vermont Catamount Classic all-tournament team on September 14. FOUR GOALS FOR DEL VALLE - Junior Lauren del Valle recorded single-game and single season career-highs of four goals in the Pride’s 7-1 victory at Colgate in Hamilton, NY on August 31. Del Valle scored Hofstra’s first four goals in the Pride’s six-goal first half onslaught. - Del Valle, who tallied three goals in each of her first two seasons, recorded her personal record-setting day coming off the bench. - The last time a Hofstra player tallied four goals in a contest was in 2011 when Krizia Layne scored four against the Saints. - Del Valle earned GoHofstra.com Student-Athlete of the Week honors on September 2 for her performance against Colgate.
HOFSTRA SENIORS - Hofstra has three seniors, Holly Andrews, Jonel Boileau and Marta Penas, on its 2014 roster. - Hofstra had five seniors on the 2013 roster. 2014 HOFSTRA CAPTAINS - Senior Jonel Boileau is the 2014 Hofstra team captain. - Senior Holly Andrews and junior Charlotte Loehr have been named vice-captains. SEVEN GAME WIN STREAK - With the loss at New Hampshire on September 21, the Pride’s longest win streak since 2003 came to a close at seven games. - Hofstra won the first eight games of 2003. - The Hofstra single season consecutive win mark is nine, set by the 1987 team that finished 15-4. The Pride also posted nine consecutive wins with their win over Rutgers in the 2002 finale and the eight wins to start 2003. 2014 CAA PRESEASON TEAM - Senior Jonel Boileau and sophomore Stella Schoen were named to the 2014 All-CAA Preseason Field Hockey Team. - Sophomore defender Carissa Witmer was an honorable mention on the preseason team. 2014 CAA PRESEASON POLL Hofstra was picked to finish sixth in the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll. 1. HOFSTRA HEAD FIELD HOCKEY COACH KATHY DE ANGELIS - Is in her 17th season at Hofstra University. - During her tenure at Hofstra, she has had five All-American selections, 23 NFHCA All-Mid-East Regional selections, 31 allconference selections, 14 conference All-Rookie Team picks and 114 NFHCA National Academic Squad selections. - Has recorded winning records in nine of the last 13 seasons. - Record six consecutive winning seasons, from 2001 through 2006, for only the second time in school history. - Has recorded a 153-162 record at Hofstra entering 2014. - Is in her 23rd year as a head coach with a career record of 180-241 entering the 2014 season. - Was head coach at La Salle from 1992 to 1995 and Southwest Missouri State in 1996 and 1997. - Has been involved with the US National Field Hockey coaching staff since 1988. - Is a 1992 graduate of Massachusetts where she was a threetime All-American. - UMass was 60-20-8 with four Atlantic 10 titles and four NCAA Championship appearances, including a Final Four berth in 1987, while she was a student-athlete. - Was a finalist for the Honda Broderick Award as National Player of the Year as a senior. - Was a member of the US Field Hockey National U21 team in 1987 and 1988, the US National Reserve Team in 1988 and 1989 and the US National Elite Team in 1990 and 1991. NFHCA ACADEMIC AWARDS - Lauren del Valle and Stella Schoen were named 2013 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Scholars of Distinction for their excellence in the classroom last season. - 15 Hofstra players were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2013. - Hofstra was named a 2013 NFHCA National Academic Team and recorded the third-highest grade point average in the nation last fall. THE HOFSTRA COACHES REPORT Fans, friends and the media are invited to listen to Hofstra Athletics coaches and players as WRHU-FM (88.7) presents the Hofstra Coaches Show. The one-hour show, which will air
locally on WRHU-FM and on the web at wrhu.org on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. will review and preview Hofstra sports during the 2014 season. PLAYER INTERVIEWS All requests for student-athlete interviews should be made at least one day in advance through Jim Sheehan in the Office of Athletic Communications (516-463-6764). If you are requesting a phone interview, we will have the student-athlete return your call at a mutually convenient time. Player cell phone numbers will not be distributed. In-person interviews may be conducted in a number of locations in and around the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. However, interviews may not be conducted in the locker room or the athletic training room.
