2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL 2014 SPRING / SUMMER NOTES THE END OF AN ERA
NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM
The 2014 campaign will mark the final season of play at historic Blackshear Field for the Panthers. The stadium was erected at its current site in the late 1940s and has undergone several renovations over the decades. However, with a limited seating capacity of 6,000 fans and limited space in the pressbox, Prairie View A&M has had to move several of its high profile games off campus to the Houston area over the years as a result.
Rendering of the new PVAMU football stadium which is slated to open in 2016
YES, SOUTHERN IS COMING
With Blackshear Field coming to a close and due to the alignment of the 2014 schedule, Prairie View A&M was limited in the amount of home games it could offer. As a result, the Panthers will play Southern on the PVAMU campus for the first time since the late 1960s on Sept. 20. Since the 1970s, Prairie View A&M has moved its home games against Southern to a variety of cities spanning from Houston, Dallas, Shreveport, La. and Beaumont, Texas. PUTTING UP NUMBERS
If the old saying of ‘offense sells tickets’ is true, the athletic department should expect to sell a boatload this season as 10 starters return from a unit which created nightmares for opposing defensive coordinators. Quarterback Jerry Lovelocke headlines a unit which shattered the university recordbooks in 2013. Lovelocke has the luxury of returning a seasoned offensive line in front of him along with a pair of running backs in Courtney Brown and Johnta’ Hebert who nearly combined to gain 2,000 yards. While record holder wide receiver Deandre Cooper departs, the Panthers return plenty of firepower at the position. EXPERIENCE IS THE KEY
With a combined 17 starters back, the Panthers will be one of the favorites in the SWAC entering the 2014 season. Head coach Heishma Northern looks to get over the hump this season with an experienced lineup which has come close to clinching a SWAC Championship Game berth in two of
his four years as head coach. In 2011, the Panthers dropped their season finale and missed an opportunity to clinch while in 2013, two costly overtime losses was the difference in staying at home and playing in Houston in December. One area that has been fairly consisSTAFF CHANGES
tent with Prairie View A&M’s rise from doormat to contender since 2004 has been continuity within its coaching staff. Outside of head coaching changes, which are usually accompanied by mass staff changes, this was probably one of the busier offseasons in terms of changes as the Panthers hired a new defensive coordinator in Cliff Yoshida and defensive line coach in Earl Cochran. Yoshida is credited for YOSHIDA helping both Southern and Grambling State return to championship form during his previous two stints in the SWAC. The veteran coach comes to Prairie View A&M after spending a year at Georgia Southern. Cochran, a former NFL player and star at Alabama State, has high school and collegiate experience at McMurry University.
RECORD BREAKERS
team had a record breaking 2013 season as a total of 36 records (team and individual) were shattered on the gridiron this past fall. The future looks bright for the Panthers as the majority of records were set by underclassmen. Listed below are the returnees who set records in 2013: QB Jerry Lovelocke RB Johnta’ Hebert PK Christopher Barrick Prairie View A&M senior punter Travis ACADEMIC CHAMPION

Football players from all JATZLAU Football Championship Subdivision institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a COCHRAN minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. 2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL 2014 SPRING / SUMMER NOTES played at his designated position. Jatzlau, who was also honored during the 2013 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Student Leadership Awards Dinner for his work in the classroom, is a three-year starter for the Panthers and has been named to the Prairie View A&M University Honor Roll for three consecutive years. GROWING PAINS
The Prairie View A&M defense is looking for stability as the defense features its fourth coordinator in five seasons. The unit returns seven starters and should improve as the majority of the unit was forced to grow up quickly as several players saw action for the first time on the Football Championship Subdivision level. COOPER EARNS NFL LOOK
Former wideout Deandre Cooper broke a trend at PVAMU recently as he participated in the Detroit Lions’ rookie minicamp. Prior to Cooper’s invite, the Panthers had three consecutive defensive linemen from 2011-13 sign free agent deals in Quinton Spears, Adrian Hamilton and Jarvis Wilson. SOUTHLAND TEST
Since head coach Heishma Northern took over in 2011, he has wanted the Panthers to make inroads in the state of Texas and regionally in terms of recruiting and scheduling. Northern has lived up to his promise as he has consistently scheduled a Southland Conference opponent. Last season, Northern scored the program’s biggest nonconference win in decades as he defeated Stephen F. Austin in a thriller. This year, the Panthers will face perennial power McNeese State on Sept. 13 in Lake Charles, La.
ROAD WARRIORS
CAJUN SPICE BACKFIELD
The road to the 2014 SWAC Championship will be a long one as the Panthers only have three home games inside Blackshear Stadium in 2014. The Panthers have seven road games scheduled over a span of four states (Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi).
The Louisiana-inspired backfield of senior Courtney Brown and junior Johnta’ Hebert return as the Panthers should be in good hands with this potent 1-2 combination. Brown (Lake Charles, La.) became the first player since 2008 to surpass the 1,000-yard mark while Hebert (Baton Rouge, La.) nearly joined him as he’s coming off a 916-yard season. Both players are also valuable in the passing game as they combined to catch 91 passes for 765 yards.
FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT
The Prairie View A&M Panther football team received a dose of good news recently as their 2014 recruiting class was named tops in the SWAC and No. 5 overall by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW website. The Panthers return to the list for the first time since head coach Heishma Northern's inaugural recruiting class in 2011 (No. 7) and achieved its highest ranking since the 2010 signing class. ENCORE PERFORMANCE
With offensive expectations higher than ever at Prairie View A&M, how high can the Panthers go in 2014? Last season, the Panthers exploded on the offensive side of the ball as they ranked sixth nationally in total offense, ninth in scoring offense, ninth in completion percentage, ninth in third down percentage, 10th in passing offense and 10th in first down offense.
TACKLING MACHINE
Senior linebacker Jerome Howard has emerged as a tackling machine for the Panthers as he’s coming of a season which saw him account for 19.5 tackles for loss and 91 HOWARD tackles. With a young defense and the loss of two starters at linebacker, Howard will be important to the unit’s success in 2014.
PANTHER FOOTBALL // 8
2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON PREVIEW EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGH AS PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PUTS THE 2013 CAMPAIGN IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR PROJECTED STRENGTHS: Nine starters are back on the offensive side of the ball as the Panthers featured one of the top offensive units in the nation last season. Senior quarterback Jerry Lovelocke is one of the top passers in the SWAC along with the dangerous 1-2 running back tandem of Johnta’ Hebert and Courtney Brown. The offensive line features senior leaders Dillon Bonnet and Tre Glover while the special teams unit return intact. EARLY QUESTION: Once again, will the defense return to the level it displayed in the mid-2000s? How will the defense adjust to new coordinator Cliff Yoshida? Who’ll pick the slack up for departed senior and record breaking wideout Deandre Cooper? How will the Panthers respond to lack of practice time due to APR restrictions and a 10-game schedule? TOP AWARDS CANDIDATES: Center Dillon Bonnet earned All-SWAC First team honors in 2013 while quarterback Jerry Lovelocke and linebacker Jerome Howard were named second team All-SWAC last season. Johnta’ Hebert and Courtney Brown combined for nearly 2,000 yards at running back last season.
On paper, the 2013 Prairie View A&M University football season could’ve been labeled a success due to a plethora of feats not seen on the gridiron in quite some time. The Panthers shattered 36 long-standing school records, defeated a Southland Conference program for the first time since 1985 and featured an offensive unit which ranked amongst the nation’s best. However, those closely associated with the program marked it as a disappointment due to the fact that a SWAC Western Division Championship slipped away despite having a firm grip on the berth. Last season, the Panthers dropped two critical overtime contests in which they held late leads in the fourth quarter. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the ball as they failed to get timely stops when needed. What also stung was the fact that the Panthers were leading in nearly every game they lost coupled with losing an opportunity to represent the SWAC West in the annual championship game which was moved to their backyard in Houston, Texas. The roles have switched over the past decade as the offensive unit will be called upon to carry the load early on in the season as the defensive side of the ball will be under its fourth defensive coordinator in four seasons. If the old saying of ‘offense sells tickets’ is true, the athletic department should expect to sell a boatload this season as 10 starters return from a unit which created nightmares for opposing defensive coordinators. Defensively,
seven starters are back from last season but with a new, coordinator, scheme and a recruiting class which looks to contribute immediately, the unit has the potential to feature an entirely different look as the season progress. OFFENSE / QUARTERBACK Offensively, the Panthers shouldn’t miss a beat with 10 starters back for the 2014 campaign. Senior quarterback Jerry Lovelocke headlines the unit as he’s coming off a career season with 2,833 passing yards and 23 PANTHER FOOTBALL // 9
2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON PREVIEW touchdowns while also rewriting the record books. Backup quarterback De’Auntre Smiley also returns and provides the team a luxury as he was a former starter two seasons ago in addition to possessing offensive firepower when needed. RUNNING BACK The Louisiana-inspired backfield of senior Courtney Brown and junior Johnta’ Hebert return as the Panthers should be in good hands with this potent 1-2 combination. Brown became the first player since 2008 to surpass the 1,000-yard mark while Hebert nearly joined him as he’s coming off a 916-yard season. Both players are also valuable in the passing game as they combined to catch 91 passes for 765 yards. WIDE RECEIVER At wideout, the Panthers will have to replace all-time single season record holder Deandre Cooper, who totaled 1,033 yards on 80 receptions in 2013. However, the cupboard is not bare as nearly the entire unit returns with senior Jacoby Anderson expected to step in and produce along with Patrick Gant, Gabe Dunlap, Greg Thurmond and Nick Pitre. Several redshirt freshmen and newcomers will also step in while the unit looks to build upon last year’s success.
DEFENSE Defensively, head coach Heishma Northern has made it a priority to return the unit to the success it had under his watch in the late 2000s. As a result, Northern reached out to a familiar name in Cliff Yoshida to lead the defense as the veteran coach is best known for defensive turnarounds and championship level defensive units featuring high productivity. 2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON PREVIEW Daniels returns as the leading tackler on the defensive line while redshirt sophomore defensive end Jamespaul Bryant moves back to the defensive line after spending the 2013 season as an outside linebacker. Bryant had 50 tackles in his first season and should flourish in a scheme which has produced dominant defensive ends. LINEBACKER At linebacker, senior Jerome Howard is back after a career season which consisted of him finishing with 91 tackles and 19.5 tackles for loss. Danny Brownell also returns as the unit will look entirely different as graduation claimed the loss of two of the unit’s top tacklers. SECONDARY The secondary was never settled last season with a variety of starting lineups used as the majority of the unit saw action for the time on the FCS ranks. Statistically, the unit posted big tackle numbers which were misleading due to the fact that they were on the field often. With another year of seasoning, more will be expected as cornerbacks Deitrich Johnson, Foster Brown II and Joshua Holley all return along with safeties Robert Jackson III and David Metcalf. Similar to the defensive line spot, newcomers from the 2014 recruiting class will possibly be asked to contribute immediately. SPECIAL TEAMS The Panthers should be in good hands on special teams as the only spot the coaching staff needs to replace is the holder. Johnta’ Hebert is back as the alltime PVAMU leader in kickoff return yardage along with Gabe Dunlap and Anthony Wiltz at punt returner. Senior punter Travis Jatzlau averaged 40.9 yards punts per game last season while Christopher Barrick is expected to bounce back as the team’s field goal kicker. Fellow senior Michael Cottingham emerged as a surprise as he recorded 19 touchbacks in his first season as PVAMU’s kickoff specialist. PANTHER FOOTBALL // 11

2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ASHLEY ROBINSON
Ashley Robinson begins his second year as the Prairie View A&M University Director of Athletics. No stranger to Prairie View A&M, Robinson served as the Assistant Vice President of Athletic Compliance & Academic Advising for three years before a nine-month stint as the athletic director at Mississippi Valley State University. Upon his arrival at Prairie View A&M, Robinson tabbed Dawn Brown to serve as interim head coach of the women’s basketball program. The move paid off as the Lady Panthers captured their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and SWAC Tournament Championship. As a result, Brown was elevated to head coach of the program in April of 2014. Robinson has worked tirelessly to enhance the department’s corporate support with the addition of several new sponsors slated to sign on for the 2014-15 campaign. He has also revised the department’s Policies and Procedure manual while also revamping the department’s finances which will directly impact the overall success of the PVAMU student-athlete on-and-off the playing field. Robinson also helped usher in a new era of facilities as the Panther baseball team opened the renovated Tankersley Baseball Stadium in March of 2014. Mississippi Valley State won Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships in Men's Cross Country, Women's Soccer and Softball since Robinson assumed command as the Athletic Director on Sept. 17, 2012. He will take over a Prairie View A&M Athletics Department that has claimed its second-consecutive SWAC Commissioners Cup, which is awarded to the most successful University in terms of athletic achievement each season. A native of Jackson, Miss., Robinson was a four-year letterman in basketball and is the single season and career recordholder in assists after playing point guard for the Mississippi Valley State University basketball team. Robinson also was named MVSU Athlete of the Year in 2002, receiving the President's Scholar Award in that same year. In August of 2006, Robinson left Mississippi Valley to begin
a career in athletic administration as an academic coordinator at Delaware State University in Dover, Del. Robinson helped implement a comprehensive academic support system for the department's 300 student-athletes and was the department's liaison to DSU's faculty, campus academic offices and support services. He also assisted with the CHAMPS / Life Skills and Student-Athlete Advisory (SAAC) Board. After eight months in Delaware, Robinson received the opportunity to return home as he accepted the position of assistant compliance director at Jackson State University. His duties included assisting the compliance director in eligibility, studentathlete certification and reinstatement and enforcing the compliance bylaws of the NCAA, SWAC and Jackson State. Robinson continued to advance up the compliance ranks by returning to his alma mater of Mississippi Valley State as the athletic department's compliance director in August of 2007. In July of 2008, Robinson was named the SWAC'S Assistant Commissioner for Compliance. As the SWAC's Assistant Commissioner, Robinson supervised a NCAA Division I Collegiate Conference Compliance and Academic Service department, the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program and was a liaison between the conference and the NCAA for rules, interpretations and appeals. He served as liaison to faculty athletic representatives, athletic directors and compliance directors. He also served as the conference office sport administrator for men's and women's basketball, track & field and volleyball in addition to event management assistance in terms of staffing, budgeting and coordinating. After a stint at the SWAC Office, Robinson accepted the position of Assistant Vice President of Athletic Compliance & Academic Advising at Prairie View A&M in 2009. During his three-year tenure at Prairie View A&M, the athletic department prospered academically under his watch as they won the 2011 and 2012 SWAC All-Academic Awards while also receiving Public Recognition from the NCAA for the women’s golf teams APR score. Robinson completed a remarkable APR turnaround as Prairie View A&M had 11 teams under the 900 mark in 2010. Relying on Robinson’s knowledge and guidance, the number was cut to only two teams for the 2011 report. He also created the Athletic Compliance and Academic Advising Office and made history with a Code 1 Audit from the Texas A&M System (best in university history). Robinson is an active member of the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, NCAA DI External Advisory Group and the National Association for Athletic Compliance (NAAC). He also is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Black Coaches Association (BCA) the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and the Mo Williams Foundation. Robinson is married to the former Carlevia Smith.

2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY HEAD FOOTBALL COACH HEISHMA NORTHERN Heishma Northern was named the 31st head coach in university history on Dec. 13, 2010. No stranger to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Northern begins his 18th season on the collegiate level. Last season, Northern had a memorable campaign as 36 offensive records were broken under his watch. The Panthers were an offensive juggernaut nationally as they ranked sixth nationally in total offense, ninth in scoring offense, ninth in completion percentage, ninth in third down percentage, 10th in passing offense and 10th in first down offense. Wide receiver Deandre Cooper, who earned an NFL Free Agent invite, also closed out his career in style as he shattered PVAMU all-time great Otis Taylor's single season mark with 1,037 receiving yards and 80 receptions. Northern also made history as his 56-48 win over Stephen F. Austin was the first over SFA in school history and the first win over a Southland Conference opponent since 1985. Six studentathletes garnered All-SWAC honors as the Panthers finished second in the SWAC West. During the 2012 campaign, the Panthers became an offensive juggernaut under Northern as they led the SWAC with 414.7 yards per game while also finishing first in pass efficiency (140.3), second in pass offense (228.0) and third in rush offense (186.7). Six players were named to the All-SWAC team with freshman Johnta’ Hebert earning SWAC Freshman of the Year honors. Prairie View A&M continued its NFL tradition as former Panther defensive end Jarvis Wilson inked a free agent deal with the Green Bay Packers. Wilson’s signing marked the fourth straight year a student-athlete from Prairie View A&M signed an NFL Free Agent contract. In his first season as head coach for the Panthers in 2011, Northern led one of the youngest teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference to within one game of earning a SWAC Championship berth as Prairie View A&M finished tied for second in the SWAC’s Western Division. As a team, the Panthers placed five players on the 2011 All-SWAC Team, led the league in rush offense with 174.8 yards per game and finished with the third-best offensive unit in the SWAC. Defensively, Northern’s defensive background had a huge impact on the field as the Panthers led the SWAC with 45 sacks. Prairie View A&M also displayed sound discipline on the gridiron as they committed the fewest amount of penalties in the SWAC. As a result of the team’s defensive prowess, defensive end Adrian Hamilton emerged as one of the top defenders in the nation as he set the SWAC and Prairie View A&M all-time sack record with 20.5 sacks en route to earning 2011 co-SWAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and a third-place finish in the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award voting, which is awarded to the top defender on the Football Championship Subdivision level. Prairie View A&M’s fifth consecutive consensus AP All-American, Hamilton also played in two postseason all-star games in addition to becoming the second straight Panther defensive lineman to sign a NFL contract as he inked with the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to Hamilton’s accomplishments, several other Panthers had impressive seasons under Northern as running back/ kick returner Jermaine Waddy led the SWAC in all-purpose yards while cornerback Moses Ellis finished as the league’s top punt returner.
Prior to becoming head coach, Northern was an awardwinning defensive coordinator for six seasons at Prairie View A&M. Under his watch, the Panther defense rose to become one of the top units in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Ranks. For the fourth straight season, Northern’s defense produced another All-American following the 2010 campaign as cornerback Moses Ellis led the nation in interceptions with eight and defended 22 passes en route to earning All-American and All-SWAC honors. As a unit, the Panthers finished second in pass defense amongst SWAC foes as they only yielded 164.6 yards per contest. As a result, four members of the Panther defense earned All-SWAC honors in Ellis (first team), defensive lineman Quinton Spears (first), free safety Chris Adingupu (second) and middle linebacker Max Sencherey (second). Despite losing six key starters and a two-time AllAmerican from the previous year, Prairie View’s defensive unit was instrumental during the team’s historic run to the SWAC Championship in 2009 as the unit led the SWAC in scoring defense with 16.6 points per outing and pass defense efficiency (101.7). The Panthers finished the 2009 season ranked fifth in total defense and produced its second consecutive All-American in defensive back Anthony Beck along with having three All-SWAC members in Beck, Spears and Adingupu. In addition, Northern’s unit recorded two shutouts on the season and held four teams to 74 yards or less on the ground. In 2008, the Panther defense set the tone for the team’s 91 record as they concluded the year ranked second nationally in

Individually, linebacker Zach East closed out his career as a two-time All-American while Beck and Spears earned First and Second Team All-SWAC Honors, respectively. A total of three starters earned All-SWAC honors led by East earning AllAmerican and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year Honors. One year removed from finishing sixth in total defense among SWAC foes, Northern made his mark in his second year at Prairie View during the 2006 season after fielding the top-ranked defensive unit in the conference. During the 2002 season, which marked Grambling’s third consecutive SWAC title, Northern’s group improved on the interception mark as they ranked fourth nationally. In 2003, Northern assumed the role of interim defensive coordinator and immediately made his impact felt as the Tiger defense finished the year ranked third nationally against the run in Division I-AA.
