Head Coach Tracy Smith Tracy Smith, who was hired as the fifth head baseball coach in program history on June 24, 2014, led the Sun Devils to a postseason berth, a third-place finish in the Pac12 and 30-plus wins in his first season at ASU. He became one of five active coaches, and one of eight all-time, to bring three different Div. I schools to NCAA Regional play as he guided the Sun Devils to a No. 2 seed in the Fullerton Regional in 2015. His 639 victories rank in the top 50 among active coaches in the NCAA, and his 19 seasons represent the fourth-shortest number of years on the list. Smith instituted a change in culture at Arizona State and his demand for excellence both on and off the field was represented as the Devils led the Pac-12 in both allconference and all-academic honorees. His emphasis on defense became evident right away as ASU vastly improved its fielding percentage and lowered its number of errors committed in Smith’s first season. The Devils finished fourth in the Pac-12 in both categories in 2015 after ranking near the bottom of the conference from 2010-14. Smith earned National Coach of the Year honors and was a unanimous choice for Big Ten Coach of the Year after he led IU to the school’s only College World Series appearance in 2013. The following season in 2014, Smith led the Hoosiers to the No. 4 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, the first national seed in Big Ten baseball history. He tallied more than 40 wins in each of the past two seasons at IU and led the Hoosiers to consecutive Big Ten Conference Championships for the first time in school history. IU won the Big Ten regular season and B1G Tournament title in 2013, marking the school’s first regular season conference championship since 1949 and the first outright crown since 1932, and advanced to the 2013 College World Series, which ended the Big Ten’s 29-year CWS absence. Smith has established a reputation of evaluating and developing talent as more than 50 student-athletes since 2000 improved their stock in the Major League Baseball Draft under Smith’s tutelage, including four who became first-round draft picks after going undrafted out of high school. In 19 total years as a head coach, Smith has seen 63 of his players selected in the MLB Draft, including 56 draftees since 2000 and 27 in the first 10 rounds. He has mentored 31 Major League Baseball draft picks over the past seven seasons, including the fourth overall pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft (Kyle Schwarber) and three first-round selections in the 2009 MLB June Draft (Eric Arnett, Josh Phegley, Matt Bashore). In nine years at the helm of Miami (Ohio) baseball program, Smith compiled eight straight 30-win seasons, two NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament finals six times. He began his coaching career as head coach at Miami University-Middletown in 1990, served as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) from 1993-94 and was the pitching coach at IU from 1995-96. A four-year letterwinner at Miami (Ohio), Smith was a pitcher and an infielder for the RedHawks, and played three minor league seasons in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Pac-12 Player of the Week David Greer earned his first career Pac-12 Player of the Week nod and ASU’s 106th all-time selection. He is the first position player for the Sun Devils to earn the honor since Drew Stankiewicz on May 19, 2014. He started all five games at first base March 8-13 and tallied 11 hits, including three doubles and a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored, and pitched two scoreless innings across a six-day span, and notched a .458 batting average, a .481 on-base percentage, and a .708 slugging percentage. He hit the go-ahead home run and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win at No. 23 Cal State Fullerton on March 9. He allowed just one base runner and struck out two in the 12th and 13th innings, and hit a leadoff solo home run in the 14th inning in a 2-1 road victory. Consistent Martinez Junior right-hander Seth Martinez is 3-1 on the year with five quality starts and has allowed just seven earned runs as a starter in 33.2 innings this season after he began the season with a streak of 14 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. He has a .211 opposing batting average with 35 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP and has twice taken no-hitters into the fifth inning (at LBSU on Feb. 26, vs. UC Davis March 12). He made his debut as the team’s Saturday starter on Feb. 20, but assumed the Friday night role the following weekend against Long Beach due to Hever Bueno’s injury. He made two consecutive Friday starts before he moved to Saturday against UC Davis March 12 after earning the save at Cal State Fullerton March 9, but moved back to the Friday role at Oregon State March 18. After making one relief appearance and a pair of midweek starts in the first three weeks of the 2015 season, he moved to the Friday night role March 6 against Long Beach State and started nine games before he moved to Sunday’s for the final series of the regular season. Zawada Finds His Bat Junior college transfer Sebastian Zawada is second in the Pac-12 with four home runs through the first 20 games of the season. No Sun Devil has hit double-digit home runs since Abe Ruiz hit 13 in 2012 (Allen hit 9 in 2013 and 5 in 2014, and Serven hit 6 in 2015). Freshman In The Outfield Freshman outfielder Gage Canning has started 17 games this season, including 16 in right field and one in center field, and is on pace to be the fifth ASU freshmen in the past 15 years to start the majority of the season in the outfield, joining Matt Newman (39 games in 2008), JJ Sferra (56 games in 2005), Colin Curtis (57 games in 2004), and Travis Buck (64 games in 2003). Shaps Finds A Spot Sophomore Andrew Shaps entered the 2016 season with six total at-bats, one run scored and zero hits in zero starts. He has started all 20 games this year and ranks third on the team with 22 hits, including a teamhigh three triples, and ranks third with 13 runs scored. Greer Comes Into His Own David Greer became a regular fixture in the lineup when then-starting third baseman Dalton DiNatale was injured March 3, 2015, and has notched a hit in 52 of the past 66 games he has started, including 16 of 20 games this season. Snow Building On Freshman Campaign Andrew Snow is third on the team in both hits with 22 and batting average at .314, and put together three consecutive games with three hits (2/21-2/26). He hit .300 in 140 at-bats in his freshman season to become the 10th Sun Devil freshman in the past 10 years to finish the season with a .300 or higher batting average (min. 100 at-bats), joining current teammate RJ Ybarra, as well as former greats such as Ike Davis, Brett Wallace and Deven Marrero. Snow earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors and drove in the gamewinning run on three seperate occasions, all in the seventh inning or later. #Woody Colby Woodmansee, who in 2015 became the first shortstop to lead the team in RBI since Jerry Maddox in 1975, and just the sixth ever (Maddox, 1975; Alan Bannister, 1972; Lenny Randle, 1968; Luis Lagunas, 1963; Roger Tomlinson, 1961), has picked up where he left off in 2016 as he leads the team with 19 RBI and 48 total bases. Also the team leader with 24 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games in 2015, the first Sun Devil since Zack MacPhee in 2010 to do so, Woodmansee leads the team with six multi-RBI games and is second with eight multi-hit games. He started all 58 games at shortstop in 2015, the first Sun Devil to start every regular-season game since James McDonald at second base in 2013, and has a hit in 62 of ASU’s past 78 games, and has reached base in 71 of them, including all 20 in 2016, dating back to the start of the 2015 season. A Seasoned Catcher Brian Serven, who was named to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award this week and a semifinalist for the award in 2015, leads all Power-5 Conference catchers with 17 runners caught stealing base this season, and his career total of 49 is more than any Sun Devil since at least 2009 (16 runners in 2015 and 15 in 2014). He is looking to join Don Wakamatsu (1983-85), Tuffy Gosewisch (2003-05) and Petey Paramore (2006-08) as the only players in school history to serve as the primary catcher in three consecutive seasons. Serven is already in elite company as one of only three catchers in ASU history, along with Jerry Mantlo
