Mesopotamia Lesson 1  The Sumerians

Collaboration:  Group Project Learning the Skill For this activity, you will work in a group of four students. This activity will involve collaboration. Collaboration means working together with one or more people to achieve a common goal. It involves research, sharing ideas with other group members, assigning tasks for each group member, and critiquing each other’s work. Working in a group requires listening to the ideas of group members and sharing your own ideas. Critiquing means saying what you like and what you dislike about the work of other group members. If you point out something that you dislike, be sure to offer suggestions that you think will improve the work. Remember that disagreements among group member are common. These disagreements can be used to come up with creative solutions. However, disagreements that are harshly expressed can tear a group apart. Each group will do publicity for a novel or film that depicts the story of Gilgamesh. This publicity includes writing a blurb that summarizes the story, writing a description of each main character, and drawing a book cover or a movie poster.

After the research is finished, come together as a group and discuss your findings. Answer the questions below. 1. What new information did you find out about Gilgamesh and epics? 2. What are some other epic novels or movies that you have enjoyed? Explain why you enjoyed them.

Mesopotamia 3. Would you prefer to do publicity for a novel about Gilgamesh or for a movie about Gilgamesh? Explain. Then decide as a group if you want to work on the publicity for a novel about Gilgamesh or a movie about Gilgamesh. Applying the Skill 1. Assign tasks for each group member. One member will write a summary of the story of Gilgamesh. Another member will write a description of each character. Two members will either draw a cover for a novel about Gilgamesh or a poster for a movie about Gilgamesh. Each member should then do his or her task. See below for tips. a. Summary: This summary should make people want to read the novel or see the movie by showing how exciting the story is. The summary can leave the reader in suspense about how the story ends.

b. Character descriptions: These descriptions should stress the dramatic action each character takes in the story.

c. Book cover or movie poster: For cover suggestions, be sure to look at covers for historical or fantasy novels. For poster suggestions, be sure to look at posters of historical or fantasy films. Notice how figures are arranged and how words such as titles or the names of actors are used.

2. After the tasks are finished, review each other’s work. Be sure to say what you like about the work of your group members. Also, if necessary, offer suggestions about ways that you think the work of your group members can be improved. 3. Present your publicity to your class. Class question:  Does the publicity make you want to read the book or see the movie? Why or why not?
