Provenance: From the collection of the Fuller Museum of Art. N.B. Gerrit Albertus Beneker was born in 1882 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1912, he went to Provincetown to study under Charles Hawthorne. He spent his early years as an artist painting portraits. Instead of executing the portraits of upper class women, as was the trend during that time, Beneker chose instead to portray working-class people such as laborers and fishermen that lived near his summer home in Truro, Massachusetts. Beneker made his living not as a portraitist, but rather as an illustrator. He created illustrations for magazines as well as war posters.1 1. “Gerrit A. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. N.B. Born in Iowa in 1907, Ross Moffett studied art in Des Moines, Chicago, and New York before moving to Provincetown. After serving in the army and traveling around Europe, Moffett returned to Provincetown in 1924. There he began the Provincetown Painting Class with friend and fellow artist Heinrich Pfeiffer. Moffett enjoyed several important commissions during his career, including murals for the Works Progress Administration and for the National Academy of Design in Abilene, Kansas. Many of Moffett’s paintings, however, drew their inspiration from his life in Provincetown. “I continued working, endeavoring to mine the vein I had uncovered.
