WYKE PRIMARY SCHOOL School Lane Normandy GU3 2HS 29th April 2016
Value of the Month: FRIENDSHIP Dear Parents The telephones are back on! Thank you for your patience regarding this, it is never a straight forward fix! Last week we had a visit from our local councillor, Mr Keith Witham. He came in to meet with me and talk to the school council. The children all asked Mr Witham some interesting questions and we were able to learn more about what councillors do, why he wants to be one and ways he could help the school. We shared some of our school improvement ideas with him and took him on a tour of the playground. We would really like to have outdoor magnifying glasses to use in the paddock area during playtimes so that we can look for bugs and observe nature up close. He really liked this idea and has asked the school council to research costs. Well done to the school council for representing your classes and the school so well! We also had a special assembly on recycling clothes and we were introduced to our new clothes scheme run by Friends of Wyke and BTR. We will be having our first clothing collection next Friday, 6th May. If you do have any old clothing and textiles, bring them into school between 8:30 and 9:00 in a bag and the BTR staff will be on hand to weigh the bags. This is a great way to recycle, as well as to help raise money for the school. After the launch next Friday, the collection bank will be available to be used as and when you would like. It is situated where our last clothing bank was just to the right of the main school entrance near the bike racks. We are in the process of planning our annual whole school trip. This year all the year groups will be going to LEGOLAND on Tuesday 28th June. More details will be sent out nearer the time. HOMEWORK – I would like to clarify how we mark homework in school. As is set out in our homework policy, homework is checked by the staff when it is returned to school. If there is any feedback, the children will receive it either verbally or in written form. We do not focus mark homework. Teachers spend two to three hours a night focus marking work from the day’s lessons and planning for the following day. It is simply not possible to mark homework to that depth. The children do put a lot of work into their homework and we appreciate and acknowledge the time and effort that goes into completing the tasks. The children have all decorated their paper plates for the St Mark’s May Fair competition. We had some lovely entries to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. I look forward to hearing the competition results. The fair is on Monday, and you will be able to see the plates on display. I would like to remind you that we are always here if you have a concern or a query. We encourage you to come in and see us, so that we are able to help and are given the opportunity to rectify any issues. I hope you have a lovely long weekend. Regards, Michelle Wilson
