READING Opinion/Persuasive Unit We are finishing up our Nonfiction Unit and then we will be moving into our next Unit, Opinion/Persuasive. We will be reading and annotating texts in order to find the main idea and support it with relevant details. We will look at the author’s opinion based on how the texts are written and find reasons to support our claim. To add on to this skill, we will also determine our own opinions and compare it to the author’s opinion. We will be looking at social issues and determining how they pertain to real-life situations. We will look at Public Service Announcements to determine what makes them persuasive. We will be able to explain statistics and social

WRITING Opinion/Persuasive Unit Upon completion of our comparative essays, we will be choosing a persuasive topic to write about and gathering information to research our particular topic. Your child will be taking a stance on this topic and introducing it by creating a clear and concise thesis statement. After that, they will state their opinions and give organized reasons to support these opinions. The writing piece will consist of relevant information including but not limited to statistics and social consensus. The closing of the writing piece will include a call to action that motivates the reader to support their opinion.

MATH We have completed our multiplication unit and have moved into fractions. To start this unit, the students have created fraction strips for halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, ninths, tenths, and twelfths. The purpose of the strips is to help your child identify equivalent fractions and see fractions as parts of a whole. We will be using multiplication and division to identify fractions. We will also be locating and placing fractions on a number line. We will use models to compare and order fractions and find fractions of sets. We will also be adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Please continue to practice flash cards with your child to keep their multiplication skills fresh.

SOCIAL STUDIES Upon completion of our Unit of China, we will be diving into Egypt! During this case study, we will be focusing on the geography and culture of Egypt. Students will complete document based writing activities and will apply their knowledge of Egypt to rigorous group related tasks. You can help your child at home by asking them to tell you what we have learned about Egypt that week. Encourage them to surf the web to find additional information on Egypt they might like to share with the class.
