Add CrystalWork to Existing Embroidery The following exercise will cover the basics of filling and editing a Crystal shape. For detailed CrystalWork Software instructions, review the DesignWorks manual. Go to Help> Help Topics. Click on the Index Tab and enter these topics in the search box: • Shapes • Crystals • Array Double click on the listed topics to find out more information about the topic or select the topic and click on Display.

Open the DesignWorks Software • Double click on the DesignWorks icon to open the software and select Next in the New Design dialog box or if the software is open, select File> New. • In the Fabric dialog box, click Next. • In the Artwork Source dialog box, place a radio dot by From Embroidery. • Click on Browse. Navigate to the location of the BERNINA DesignWorks Samples. • Locate design CDW0139.ngs. Click on Open. • From the Hoop drop down selection, choose BERNINA Large Oval 255 x 145, #48 hoop. Click Next. • From the Color Reduction dialog box, click Finish. • Edit > Select All. Right click and select Group.

Create a Shape: • Select Create Ellipse. If this tool is not visible, click on the black triangle and drag your cursor over to select the Ellipse.

• Click on the design area, drag the cursor to the right and

down. Right click to set the circle, deselect the tool, and select the circle.

Notes: Exercise includes: * Creating & Editing a Filled Shape * Setting Individual Crystals * Circular Array To complete this exercise, CrystalWork module must be activated in the DesignWorks Software. Each module is activated through the purchase and installation of access codes available from the local BERNINA Dealer. Instructions are written for full DesignWorks Software Suite installation. The Wizard will walk through the steps needed to begin creating the design. Adjustments are made to the stitch types for the design, according to the fabric selected. Choose color either for visibility on the design space or choose a color that most closely resembles the finished project media to preview Crystal/Thread/ Paint color options as they will appear on the final project. Different operating systems will place the BERNINA DesignWorks Sample folder in different locations. It is always easy to find the location by going to Programs> BERNINA DesignWorks> BERNINA DesignWorks Samples. Look at the file path across the top of the dialog box. That is where your samples will be located. 1

• In Tool Options, make sure Proportional is not selected. • Change the Height and the Width to 35 mm.

Centering the Design • Select Edit> Select All or Ctrl + A to select all. • To center the circle in the design, select Align Centers Horizontally and select Align Centers Vertically. • Click on Manage Hoop Options. • Place a check mark in front of Center Design to Hoop. • Choose OK.

Add Crystal Fill • In Sequence Manager, select the circle layer to zoom in and also to select the circle. • In Object Properties, select the Fill tab and select Crystal Fill. • Make these adjustments for the crystal fill: • Select crystal Size: 6 • Color/Shape: Topaz • Fill drop down menu: select Contour

Editing the Fill Contour positions the crystals following the shape. The design’s shape will impact the distance between and layout of the crystals. • Edit with the following adjustments: • H. Spacing: 3.0 mm • V. Spacing: 3.0 mm

Notes: By default, DesignWorks Suite selects Paint Fill. If Tool Options are not visible at the top of the design area, select View >Toolbars and make sure there is a check mark by Tool Options. To change from US to Metric, select Tools > Options> Measurement system > Metric.

If the Sequence Manager is not visible, go to View Menu and make sure there is a check mark by Sequence Manager. If Object Properties are not visible at on the right of the design area, select View > Toolbars and make sure there is a check mark by Object Properties. The default Crystal Fill is Shape Fit. A variety of fill options and editing functions are available within the Crystal Works module. If you do not see the crystal colors, resize or move the Object Properties box.

Add Outline • With circle selected, in Object Properties, select the Outline tab. Select Crystals. • Edit the outline as indicated: • Select crystal Size 10 • Color/Shape: Siam • Change Spacing: 5.0 mm • Hit Enter or click on the screen to activate changes.

Adding Single Crystals • Select the Create Crystal Shape icon. • In Tool Options, select the type of crystals: • Select Palette: Swarovski Round • Color / Shape: Siam • Size: SS10 • Click two times between two sun rays just beyond the tips of sun rays to set two crystals. • Select the space bar to deactivate the Crystal icon.

Apply Circular Array to Crystals • Draw a box around the two crystals to select them. • While the crystals are selected, select Create Circular Array. • Adjust the settings in Tool Options: • Start angle: 0° • End angle: 360° • Step count: 18 • Select Apply Circular Array. • While all the crystals are selected, right mouse click and select Group. Click away to deselect. • In Tool Options, enter 3 in the Rotate box. • You may move the individual crystals by selecting, right clicking, and selecting Ungroup. • Select File> Save As and name the file, Add CrystalWork to Existing Embroidery. • To export the embroidery file, click on Export or select File> BERNINA. • To export the crystal file, select File> Export> Crystals to Machine. • A dialog box opens up that shows the layout of the crystal design. Click on the Export icon within the dialog box to export the crystals to a USB stick. Refer to the CrystalWork tool manual for details regarding the use of the tool.

The CrystalWork Accessory Tool and compatible BERNINA embroidery machine are needed to execute a completed CrystalWork design.
