5v5 Basketball ANY RULES NOT SPECIFICALLY COVERED HERE WILL BE FOLLOWED ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BASKETBALL RULE BOOK. Teams Teams are comprised of 5 players. Rosters are limited to 12 players. Minimum number of players to start a game is 4. Equipment Jerseys with numbers are required. Athletic shoes only. Timing Games will consist of 2 halves, each lasting 20 minutes. Clock: The clock will only stop on time-outs, except for the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half and the last minute of each overtime. During the last two minutes of the 2nd half and the last minute of each overtime, the clock will stop on every whistle. Time Outs Length: 1:00 (or less, if both opponents are ready before the time out is over) Number: 2 per team per half during regulation periods, 1 per team for each O.T. Timeouts cannot be carried over from one half to the next, or from regulation periods into overtime, or from one overtime to the next. Overtimes are 3:00 each. The clock will operate the same as it does during regulation periods, except that it will stop only in the final minute of each overtime when the whistle is blown. One time out per team per overtime. Time outs unused during regulation periods are not available to be used during overtimes. Gameplay Scoring: Forfeits: Teams have a 5 minute grace period as long as at least one player is checked in at game time. If enough players show up during the grace period, the game clock will reflect the amount of time elapsed for the grace period. After the 5 minute grace period has
expired, the game will be recorded as a forfeit. The recorded score for forfeited contests will 10-0. Men’s or Women’s leagues: Scoring will be according to typical basketball rules: 3 points for shots from beyond the arc, 2 points for shots from inside the arc, and 1 point for each free throw. Free throws: Players may enter the lane upon the RELEASE of the basketball. When a team accumulates 7 fouls in a half, its opponent will be eligible to shoot 1and-1 free throws. When a team accumulates 10 fouls in a half, its opponent will be eligible to shoot 2 consecutive free throws. CoRec leagues: Men’s shots are counted the same as they would be in the men’s league. Additional CoRec Modifications: Minimum of 2 women on the court at all times. Ball: The same ball that is used in the men’s games will be used for the CoRec games. Shots – Plus One System: Womens’ shots from inside the arc will count for 3 points, and 4 points from beyond the arc. Womens’ foul shots will count 1 point each – if they are fouled while making a basket, they will get one foul shot; if they are fouled and miss the basket, they will get the same number of foul shots they would have gotten if the basket had been made. A woman fouled with her team in the bonus will receive two front-end free throws, followed by the bonus free throw. Example: a woman is fouled and her team is in the bonus (7th team foul). She will have one free throw which will then be followed by a normal one-and-one. If she misses the second free throw, the ball becomes live. If she makes the second free throw, she is awarded the bonus throw. Substitutions: Players may enter the game when the ball is dead by permission of the referee after alerting the scorer’s table. Upon alerting the scorer’s table, players should be seated on the floor or should stand clear of the scorer’s table to avoid blocking the view of scorekeepers and clock operators. Typically, substitutions may occur between foul shots on a 1-and-1 or double bonus shooting opportunity. Mercy rule: If a team is ahead by 20 or more points with less than 3 minutes remaining in the second half the clock will run. If a team is ahead by 30 points anytime in the second half or at the end of the first half, the game is over. Dunking: Not allowed. No points will be awarded for a dunk, and a technical foul will be assessed against the offending player.
Fouls: Intentional, Technical, and Flagrant fouls will result in an automatic TWO (2) points and a change of possession. Players accumulating 5 personal fouls will be disqualified for the remainder of the game. Team Fouls will reset at half-time. Bonus shots: will be taken on the 7th team foul and double bonus will be awarded with 10 or more fouls and will reset at half time.
