ATTENTION SLC PARENTS~ Let Us Know If You Have Students at Home to be Enrolled! We are preparing for the enrollment lottery for the 2017-18 school year. The DEADLINE TO NOTIFY US IS FEB. 8th. The lottery will be held 5:00 PM, Feb. 21. Please let Alison (
[email protected]) know if your currently enrolled student has any siblings that are eligible for Kindergarten (age 5 by September 1, 2017), or any other grade. You will also need to complete the application located at the top of the SLC homepage and have your future Kindergarten student complete an early childhood screening.
PARENTS~JMC UPDATE REMINDER Please make sure you have gone into Schoolcraft’s JMC program and checked and updated your information. This is very important because you select your choice of how you want to be notified in a weather, emergency, etc. situation. Only half of our families have done this. Information was given to you in your fall paperwork. Call if you need help with the process.
WINTERFEST IS COMING!
Friday, March 3 will be WINTERFEST! This is a fun and exciting day at Schoolcraft each year! This is an outside day for exploring a variety of outdoor activities such as: dog sled rides, cross
country skiing, snowshoeing, horse drawn sleigh rides, ice fishing, and a bon fire with s’mores while listening to legends! Do not forget Donna’s hot chocolate and game time in Paris.
The crews rotate on a schedule, through each activity. Students need to be prepared to be outside all day; they should have snow pants, boots, scarves, mittens, hat and warm coat (if it is wet outside, extras of these to change into are necessary.) We need volunteers to help at most stations, we especially need help with putting on skis and boots, to make the day a success. Please consider coming for all or part of the day. Please call the front desk: 586-3284 OR email us at:
[email protected] to let us know you will be with us, if you have a preference where you would be willing to help and so we can have enough lunch for every one. These are the areas we could use help with: cross country skis, snowshoes, ice fishing, sleigh ride, classroom aides, hot cocoa/break area. Thanks in advance and we look forward to spending a great day together!
CONFERENCE INFORMATION Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held March 9 & 10. These dates are for a Thursday and Friday. Please make note of this. IF YOU NEED A SPECIAL DAY AND TIME FOR YOUR CONFERENCE, PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL THE FRONT DESK WITH YOUR REQUEST, PRIOR TO WEDNESDAY, FEBRURARY 8. Thank you for your attention to this.
PAC with Special Education Advisory Council MEETING
The next PAC meeting
will be held Monday, February 13th, 6:30 PM in the side room at Lazy Jacks. Typically PAC would meet on Tuesday, but due to Valentine’s Day it was changed to a day earlier. It would be great to have you join us! We will be having a SEAC (Special Education Advisory Council) meeting at the tail end of the PAC meeting on February 13th at Lazy Jacks. Everyone is welcome to stay for this and we would especially welcome parents of children who receive special education services. This is again an informational meeting to see if there are topics of interest or needs from our Schoolcraft families. We are also looking for parents who would like to be involved with SEAC.
It’s that time again! The time to consider what you can bring to Schoolcraft’s Board of Directors. Our elections will be coming soon and your voice as parent, community member, or teacher is needed! You might be wondering what does a member of a school board do? In a nutshell, we are here to make sure that Schoolcraft Learning Community fulfills its mission which is to help develop individuals to be self-directed, lifelong learners who have the skills and knowledge to confidently and compassionately navigate in the world. How does that happen? Well, by working with our Executive Director and maintaining compliance with our authorizer, the state, the federal government, and the public we ensure that our school is the best it can be for our students and families. How often do we meet? Our meetings usually last an hour and we meet on a monthly basis unless the school board has something pressing to work on. Is there training? Yes! Our board members are provided opportunities to train online and in person with the Minnesota Charter School Association. We also meet in the summer at a leadership training to help all our members be energized and informed. How do you become a member of the board? When a position opens on the board for a community member representative, a teacher representative or a parent representative, an election is cast to fill the position. You will need to write a basic introduction letter that is shared with our community. After that, the families and teachers will vote on who they feel is the best candidate for the position. A board member is asked to serve for two years. We hope that you are considering to add your name to the ballot. There will a number of openings this coming spring and we are hoping you will be a part of our team! Send any questions or interest to
[email protected].

New Year, New Grit
What are your children’s goals for the new year? When you think of the year to come, are you hoping for better grades? Do you want to experience new things? Do you hope to grow and become better people? There are all kinds of things that we “resolve” to do at the beginning of the year each year. According to a commonly cited statistic, only 8% of New Year’s resolutions are successful each year. What is missing? One of our Habits of Scholarship is Perseverance, which is defined by the dictionary as “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” Another word for this is “grit.” Everything that we want for ourselves and for our children requires a certain amount of determination, and that determination doesn’t necessarily come naturally. How can we build grit in our children, and in ourselves? I’m glad you asked!
1
When you are faced with challenges, instead of backing down, adopt a “yet” mindset… “I can’t do this… yet.” “I don’t get it… yet.” “This doesn’t work… yet.” You might not be able to do it yet, but you will be able to get it eventually, if you keep working on it! It is always important to talk about people who are successful now who failed many times before they found success. J.K. Rowling’s first book was rejected 12 times before she found a publisher who was willing to take a chance on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Dr. Seuss’s first book was rejected 27 times. “If you’ve never failed, you’ve never tried anything new.” Remember that every mistake is a learning opportunity! Move outside of your comfort zone! If you always stay inside your comfort zone, it never grows. Start small, by trying something that you’re only a little bit uncomfortable with, like a food you like cooked in a different way than you’re used to. Maybe trying a new restaurant or talking to a stranger. When you become comfortable with those things, move on to bigger things, like trying an activity that you’ve never tried before, or joining an organization that you’re not familiar with. Finally, try these 10 questions to help you start to think about how you can grow and change.
