[email protected] Newsletter 15 - 8th January 2016 ‘Achieving More, Together’ Dear Parents and Carers, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome back to school everyone and we hope you all had fun yet restful Christmas break. Thank you so much for all of the cards and gifts given to me personally and to the staff team. We really appreciate the time and thoughtfulness given to this, a little bit of praise and thanks goes a long way, thank you. Staffing Update: Just before Christmas we appointed Mrs Ward to work alongside Miss Williams in teaching the Reception Class from the week beginning 25th January when Mrs Corrin starts her maternity leave. Many of you will know Mrs Ward as she was the Manager of Nythe Pre-School for a number of years. Miss Williams and Mrs Ward will be sharing the responsibility for teaching the class under my leadership. Mrs Ward brings a huge amount of experience with her and we are all delighted that she will be joining us. Quality Improvement: We were visited by Mr Peter Nathan this week who is the Head of Education for Swindon. Mr Nathan visited each classroom and went through the actions we have already taken this year to improve our lovely school. This visit was all part of the package of support in place that also includes our work alongside other schools that have already gained a ‘Good’ grade from Ofsted. I look forward to sharing more information about the ongoing improvement of the school with you as the term progresses. Have a safe and happy weekend, Sally Clarke B.Ed. (Hons) NPQH Head Teacher

RECEPTION, YEAR 1 AND YEAR 2—FLU VACCINATION The flu season runs until the end of March 2016. From October 2015 flu vaccine in the form of a nasal spray will be offered routinely to all children aged two, three and four and those at school in years one and two. All children born between 1st September 2008 and 31st August 2013 are eligible to be vaccinated. Flu can be a very serious illness in children causing fever, stuffy nose, dry cough, sore throat, aching muscles and joints, and extreme tiredness. This can often last several days. Serious complications of flu include a painful ear infection, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
Having the flu vaccine will help protect your child ,as well as protecting these vaccinated children, flu is less able to spread as easily, and so they also help to protect their younger brothers and sisters, and other family members including their parents and grandparents who may be more susceptible to the complications of flu. Further information on children’s flu vaccine can be found on the NHS Choices website at: http://www.nhs.uk/ Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/child-flu-vaccine.aspx
Growth Mindset Celebration of learning this week Tadpoles (Reception)
Zebras (Year 1)
Tadpole Class visited Pets at Home. We handled a range of animals and learnt how to take care of a pet.
Zebra class have been busy learning about the author Julia Donaldson and the different books she has written.
Giraffes (Year 2)
Penguins (Year 3)
This week in Giraffe class we began learning to play the glockenspiel! We created our own rap song and played along to the song using the glockenspiel instruments. We are looking forward to playing them more throughout this term and hope to learn a few notes along the way!
This week, the children took part in a ‘find the states’ hunt in the playground. This was to introduce them to our new topic, ‘Road Trip USA!’ They had to find all the states and locate them on the map. It was good competition to see who could complete it first!
Squirrels (Year 4) To start our topic we had a treasure hunt outside searching for some of the American states and the Native Americans that originated there.
Eagles (Year 5)
Tigers (Year 6)
This week in Eagles class we learnt that our new topic will be Tomorrow’s World. This led to us discussing in groups what we think the future will look like. We came up with lots of ideas such as hover cars, boards and shoes. Some groups even discussed the idea that we would be suffering from too much pollution, and skyscrapers will cover the planet.
This week Tiger class have been learning about hieroglyphics. We found some hieroglyphics on the playground and translated them to find a fascinating fact about the Ancient Egyptians. Ask a year 6 if you want to find out what it was!
