Envisioned as a new urbanist community in the Riyadh desert, the Al Wasl streetscapes and related open spaces were required to be deeply shaded and well proportioned to encourage walking and transit ridership. Tree-ways filled with structural soils were developed alongside the infrastructure systems and coordinated with engineering consultants. Cantilevered trellis systems were designed to act as an armature for vines and solar panel in locations that are not appropriate for street trees. A project wide light rails system moves people from residential districts to high density commercial and retail zones.
