Conclusion: The irregulary placed volumes break up the urban fabric, creating a public outdoor gathering space and additional circulation paths through the site. Placing program underground allows the above ground building forms to be flexible in their size and placement. The extruded volumes house program and serve as light sources. Opening space at ground level creates green areas that contribute to the mission of developing healthier city environments.

Translucent channel glass volumes bring light into the spaces below.

This study invents several architectural tactics to achieve these goals. Three rectangular volumes constructed from channel glass are offset, creating gathering spaces in the midst of a bustling city area. The extruded volumes contain program that require the most natural lighting, and also serve as sculptural elements. Program that doesn’t need direct access to the outdoors is located underground, receiving natural lighting from channel glass structures and skylights in the ground plane. During the day, the center invites people to enjoy and occupy the outdoor space, and when lit at night the complex acts as a glowing beacon attracting the public. Healthful facilities and modern art are integrated into a city setting, encouragingtheoccupationofthegreenspace.

An irregularly-shaped site in a dense district in Boston served as a case study for this recreation center building prototype. The site was located at a busy intersection that lacked access to green space, but also called for a recreation center. By placing program above and below ground, the area
The lowest level can span the entire area without interfering with the above site context. This allows the flexibility in the building forms and placement.
