A m a D ablam , Post-M onsoon Ascents, A ttem pts and Tragedy. As has been the case in past post-m onsoon years, many expeditions head for A m a D ablam (6812 m eters, 22,349 feet). In 1992, they com pleted the 100th to the 112th ascents. Except for w here noted, the route o f ascent was the southw est ridge. A British expedition led by H enry Todd was also accom panied by two Poles. The sum m it was reached by Pole R yszard Paw low ski and Briton Jeff Lakes on O ctober 24, by Paw low ski again, A lec M cN ab, Paul Roberts, Phil C lark, leader Todd and Pole K rzysztof P ankiew icz on N ovem ber 1 and by Ian C otgrove and Paw low ski for the third tim e on N ovem ber 7. A French party o f 11 French clim bers and an Italian was led by D aniel Petraud and Jean-Jacques Rolland. L eader Petraud and Pierre B lanchard got to the top on O ctober 24, G ilbert L om bard and M lle M arie Sangnier on the 25th and Eric B érard and Petraud again on the 27th. A m erican P eter A thans, w ho led 14 A m ericans, accom panied the French to the sum m it on O ctober 24, while Scott C ole, Jason Keith and Todd B urleson got there on N ovem ber 7. Frenchm an Jean-N oël Roche led another Frenchm an, 4 A m ericans, 2 Belgians and 2 Italians. Roche w ith A m ericans T im othy Gill and R ichard Southw ell reached the sum m it on O ctober 25, follow ed on O ctober 28 by Roche again and Italians Pierluigi A vataneo and M auro G aido. Tragically Belgian K arine van D ooren died in a fall. Nine Spaniards were led by Lluis G iner. On O ctober 26, leader G iner, Tomas Bravo, Sergi M artínez, M anuel de la M otta and D iego Fernández got to the top, follow ed on N ovem ber 4 by C arlos Bravo and de la M atta again. Laurent Terray, leader o f a four-m an French expedition, clim bed to the sum m it on N ovem ber 12. The only successful group not to clim b the norm al route, 3 A ustralians and 2 C anadians led by R ichard H ow es, ascended the southeast ridge and descended the southw est ridge. On N ovem ber 1, A ustralian Richard H ow es, M att G odbold and Ray Vran and C anadian K obus B ardard reached the top. T hree unsuccessful expeditions attem pted the northeast ridge. They were 6 B ritons, an A m erican and a N orw egian led by M alcolm D uff (high point: 6170 m eters on O ctober 10), 2 Italians led by R enzo Turri (high point: 5350 m eters on O ctober 13) and 3 Sw iss led by B eat B aum ann (high point: 6000 m eters on O ctober 15).
