An Inside Look at Lehman Finishes Season With Victory At Key Span Park

A

fter a season which saw the Lehman College men’s baseball team struggle for victories, the Lightning ended the 2006 campaign with a miraculous 8-6 victory over the City College of New York, at KeySpan Park, the New York Mets minor league ballpark. Lehman jumped out the gates early on an rbi single by senior Steve Bochicchio to give the Lightning an early advantage, but clutch hitting, and three errors by Lehman enabled CCNY to take a 3-1 after three innings. The game remained the same until the sixth inning when the Lightning struck for five runs on six hits to regain the lead. Junior centerfielder Lenny Gonzalez had two hits, as did right fielder Michael Mercado. Sophomore Xavier Colon pitched five strong innings to earn the win for Lehman, while Bochicchio picked up the save.

With the Lehman baseball season coming to a close, Lightning fans now look to the future. The 2006 season saw Lehman post impressive wins over national power New Jersey City University, and regional rivals CCNY, and Yeshiva University. The Lehman roster features fifteen underclassmen, so the squad will feature a lot of experience next season. If the Lightning squad can improve and pick up valuable lessons from this past season, the future could be very bright on the diamond for Lehman. “We have an extremely young team,” added Mehling. “The results were not what we would have wanted them to be, but the experience that our guys picked up should pay dividends in the future of Lehman baseball.” The City University of New York all-stars will be selected next week, and Lehman’s Colon, and Bocchiccio, as well as freshman slugger Kareem Benjamin and senior David Malave are all candidates to be selected to the allstar teams. Lehman finishes the season with a 6-21 overall record.

“This was a great way to end the season,” said Lehman head coach John Mehling. “After struggling for most of the season our guys have a chance to finish the season in a minor-league ball park, and gain a victory is very meaningful to the program.”
