SWA established a comprehensive urban redevelopment plan for the area surrounding Disneyland, including the addition of a pedestrian-oriented retail entertainment center and a resort hotel district. By visually transforming an aging suburban environment into a gardenlike destination resort, SWA helped enhance Disneyland’s reputation as the world’s premiere theme park. Surrounding streets and public spaces were integrated into an exotic urban destination resort. The simplicity of the overall landscape design emphasizes the use of geometry to create unity and scale; diversity in plant material to create a subtropical environment; and the predominance of drought tolerant, low-maintenance plants for economy and responsible resource management. Traditional urban design elements such as land use, circulation, building massing, and infrastructure were also integrated into this public realm landscape resort, which is now visited by 20 million visitors annually.
