For Immediate Release February 11, 2016, New York, NY – NYC Pride is excited to announce its 2016 theme, ‘Equality Needs You’ with the release of theme artwork and brand elements for this year’s events. The organization explained the meaning behind the theme with the following statement: "We’re getting closer, but we aren’t there yet. Just ask the bisexual homeless youth on the Christopher Street Pier, the trans worker trying to achieve the American dream, or the gay refugee escaping certain death in his war torn homeland. The Supreme Court's affirmation of marriage equality marked progress in the national and worldwide LGBT movement, but it was not a finish line. Equality needs you now more than ever. In 2016, we are making sure that some of the world’s largest and most visible LGBT events are helping to amplify our continued fight. EQUALITY NEEDS YOU, and you can answer the call. Join us for NYC Pride 2016.’ The 2016 NYC Pride roster features iconic LGBT events including the March, Rally, PrideFest, Teaze, and Dance on the Pier, along with a variety of other events for LGBT and allied people of all ages. All events take place from June 19 to June 26. NYC Pride traces its roots to the 1969 Stonewall Riots, and the first Pride March that took place in New York City to commemorate the Riots in 1970. In 2015, an estimated 2 million people participated in NYC Pride. NYC Pride is also hard at work preparing for the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall in 2019, when New York will welcome LGBT people from across the globe for WorldPride.
