WOODBURY COMMUNITY CHURCH / January 2017 NEWSLETTER

From Our Pastor 6

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6

I can’t remember a time in my life that so many of my friends have told me that they can’t wait for one year to end and another to begin. 2016 was a difficult year for many people. As we turn the page on our calendars and a new year begins, many are filled with hope for something better, and many are filled with fear that things will continue to go wrong. All of this begs the question, “Where is your hope found?” If your hope is found in the things of this world, then your hope will often be crushed. Why? Because, our world is broken. Sometimes our political system fails. Sometimes our investments fail. Sometimes our friendships fracture. Sometimes people that we really care about get sick. Yes, this world is broken. But, there is good news. God isn’t broken. The Lord is aware of what might be troubling you today. He is never surprised by the news of the day. He is working amidst our brokenness. Paul put it well in Philippians 1:6, when he wrote, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” 2017 brings us one year closer to the return of Jesus. We ended 2016 with a 30-day spiritual adventure called A Disciple-Making Christmas. As a congregation, we examined some of the relationships that God has placed in our lives, and some of the spiritual habits that God has called us to embrace. Will you embrace intentional living in 2017? Will you recognize that God is doing a work in you, that is sometimes painful, with the end goal of helping you become more like Jesus?

This world is a temporary home for us. In the years that God gives us the privilege of living on earth, let’s invest in eternity. Let’s spend our lives honoring God by making more disciples for Jesus. In his classic book, Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis wrote, “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” You were! You were made for another world. Philippians 3:20-21 says, “20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” If you have committed your life to Jesus Christ, you are a citizen of heaven. So, my fellow citizen of heaven, let’s live like it! Let’s do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God! Let’s make everywhere that we go a better place, because we have Christ living in us! Let’s treat people with love and respect. Let’s love people like Jesus does. Let’s serve like Jesus modeled. Let’s boldly share the difference that Christ has made in our lives, and invite others to consider following Him too. Let’s pray for 2017 to be a year of spiritual harvest. God is on the move! Will you move with Him? In His Service, Pastor Brian
