Arizona T otem Pole, M onum ent Valley. K en W yrick and I were hired by U niversal Studios to “put the rope up” for the filming of the desert part of the movie Eiger Sanction. W e spent 14 days on the Totem Pole and its nearby walls. O ur duties were prim arily to w ork with Clint Eastwood, stuntm en and the clim ber-cinephotographers, Pete W hite, M ike H oover and Peter Pilafian. O ur ascent was the fifth. A t the end we cleaned the T otem Pole of its bolts and pitons as requested by the N avajo Council. Thus ended an era of climbing on w hat is surely the thinnest, tallest sandstone tow er in the world. All climbing is prohibited within the tribal park and the law is energetically enforced by the N avajo police. E
