FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK…. Greetings! Many thanks to those folks that are brainstorming ways to make a new playground become a reality for the students and parishioners of St. John the Evangelist. Our current playground is almost thirty years old, and it is worn, rusty in spots and has areas out of compliance with modern safety standards. We are getting quotes and hope to scrape together funding-it could cost $50,000.00 or more! A big St. John shout out goes to the PTO for a fun and financially profitable family picnic fund raiser last Friday. Mr. MacQueeney, Mr. Macdonald and myself each spent an hour in the dunk tank, "the longest hour of my life," opined Mr. MacQueeney! The kids loved it and Rex, Father's dog, took care of any stray balls. I had fun but was worn out at the endlol! I hope adults (paid employees or volunteers) are taking advantage of the Virtus training which is occurring tomorrow (Saturday, September 27) from 9am-1PM in Trinity Hall. You must sign up on-line virtus.org and space is limited.

October 13 Columbus Day NO School

We are attempting to schedule an "Engineering Fundamentals with LEGO" fundamental engineering concepts class at SJES, if there is interest, after school. There are two grade levels K-1st grade and 2nd-5th grade. The course can be 90 minutes for $17 each. Parents must agree to pay for ten classes. I have one sponsor who will donate money to the program to lessen the cost, and the class could be shortened to 60 minutes to lessen the cost as well. See me if you are interested asap, as I will be speaking to the company reps this week. I do have a colorful two page flyer to share with you. Mrs. Fine has already agreed to chaperon and allow her room to be the "LEGO Lab".

October 14 3rd Grade Field Trip 4th and 5th Grade Field Trip

I want to compliment all the students on their behavior this first month of school. They are calm and quiet in classes (for the most part) and in the hallways. I am very proud of our student body! I encourage them to continue their efforts.

October 14 OR November 3

Kudos to the staff and especially Mrs. Fine and Mrs. Evans (co-chairs of the DFE Steering Committee) for the completion of the main document for the "Design for Excellence" five year school certification plan. Mrs. Fine and Mrs. Evans spent many hours here at the school over the long summer.

School and Club News •

Please be aware that once children are signed out of extended day and leave the school grounds, they are not allowed to be signed back in. When students leave the grounds for an activity they should be picked up at that location or arrangements made with the instructor of that event for pickup. The reason for this rule is Extended Day is only open until the last signed in child leaves. Extended Day does not stay open without any students and they do not know who might come back or the timing of the return to Extended Day. Please email me or call Extended Day with any questions. [email protected]

If you have not completed the Emergency Care Form, the Wavier Information and Right Object, as well as, the Handbook agreement, please turn in to the office ASAP. These are diocesan forms and are required by all families. We also need supply fees if payment has not been made. Thank you for your prompt submission.

The soccer club will finish on Wednesday, October 29th. They will do drills and then scrimmage until 4:15. Balls are provided. Players may wish to bring their own water bottles. Please contact Coach Mac for more information [email protected]

The cross country team is sponsored by Mr. Macdonald and includes both boys and girls from 4-8th grade. The team will finish the second week of November with a Kids Fun Run organized through Fauquier County. The club will practice Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:20-4:15pm.

The soccer and cross country groups will not practice on Monday, October 13th (no school). Students must have a parental consent form signed and returned before they are allowed to participate in either soccer or cross country.

Mrs. Anderson is sponsoring a Chess Club. Meetings will take place in the Library every Thursday from 3:30-4:15. It is open to grades K-8. Bring a chess set. Contact Mrs. Anderson for more information [email protected]

A VIRTUS training session will be held here, at St. John the Evangelist School, Saturday, September 27th from 9-1pm! In accordance with diocesan policy, each volunteer must complete a background check and complete VIRTUS training. Although there are many sessions offered in various cities before and after this date, it might be more convenient for some to attend a session at St. John's. Other sessions are held in locations such as Arlington, Falls Church, Springfield and Alexandria just to name a few. You can go to www.VIRTUS.org to register and select a time and location that is convenient for you. If you have any questions concerning the background check requirements, please contact the school office.

RACE FOR SEMINARIANS Dear St. John’s Family and Friends: On Sunday, October 26, 2014, I will be running in the Marine Corps 10K with the Diocese of Arlington ~ Race for Seminarians Team as a way to support our future diocesan priests and to raise vocation awareness. My goal is to finish 6.2 miles, which is a challenge, but nothing compared to the challenge faced by men answering their call to the priesthood with a heartfelt yes! Fundraising will directly support the work of the Diocesan Office of Vocations and assist those discerning a vocation to the priesthood, as well as those who are already in seminary formation. The diocese provides each seminarian with an education, housing and food, yet other unexpected expenses occur. Donations will help supplement discernment programs as well as pay for seminarian expenses not normally covered by the diocese such as medical co-payments, car repairs, and travel expenses in the event of a family emergency. To make a secure credit card donation online, simply go to: https://secure.arlingtondiocese.org/CDAVOC/ donations/index.cfm. Please don’t forget to locate my name in the drop down menu and click it to indicate that you are donating in my name. If you prefer to make a donation by check, simply fill out the attached form and mail it with a check (payable to the Catholic Diocese of Arlington) to: Race for Seminarians PO Box 1960

Merrifield, VA 22116-1960.

Please keep our team in your prayers. Your support will bring many blessings to our future priests, and through them, to countless others for many years to come! THANK YOU! J.M.J, Kelley Smith
