Intro The results from assignment 2 has been further analyzed and actions have been mapped. Finally, ideas have been developed and the best suitable idea has been chosen for further development.
HTA A HTA has been carried out in order to map the actions carried out when growing herbs. Then different steps are divided into sup-steps that explain the actions in more detail. From the theory about HTA the plant should be seen as the “machine”. A HTA is a very good tool to define and map the actions for reaching the user’s goal. The result will be used in the SSD below.

The Erroneous Transitions The points A to G defines the possible wrong transitions that can occur during the growing herbs process. The numbers in parenthesis are the two steps in the SSD that should not have a transition. After the colon, the possible solution for the erroneous transition is described. A. B. C. D. E. F. G.
Watering empty pot (1-3): transparent pot Over watering the seed (2-3): measuring jug Drying out the seed (2-4): automated watering system Over fertilizing the plant (5-6): measuring jug Over watering the plant (6-7): measuring jug Harvesting the plant too soon (7-9): time schedule Harvesting the plant too late (8-9): time schedule
Transition matrix A Transition matrix was carried out in order to find potential errors and unfavorable interaction regarding the planting process and the human activity carried out during this process. This could be potential dangerous situations or just annoyance and these situations and problem form the basis for development of ideas and sketches.

Persona A persona has been set up together with some scenarios for this persona. This will give a more realistic explanation of the problem and show possible solutions for this.
Emilie is a 25-year-old woman living in the inner city of Copenhagen. She is the middle kid out of three siblings. And her parents live in Aarhus where she grew up. She recently finished her master in economics and was hired for her first career job as a financial counselor. Even though she is very interested in home bakery, she does not really have the time to bake a lot, after starting her new job. Apart from working she does also go to fitness once a week an in her spare time she enjoys reading books. Her dream is to become a CEO in a bank. Emilie’s life is quite busy, but she still makes time for cooking proper food because she thinks it is important to eat healthy. Therefore, she does also like to grow her own herbs at home. Because of the limited space in the apartment, the herbs are placed next to the sink at the kitchen table. Once in a while she takes some leaves from the plants to use in the food.
Scenarios 1. Emilie in the kitchen – current scenario Emilie comes home late in the afternoon after work. She is in a hurry to cook before going to fitness training. While preparing the meal she moves around in the small kitchen and goes to the sink with a pot. After filling it with water she turns around to the stove and accidentally hits one of the pots with the herbs. It turns over and soil spills all over the table. Emilie is annoyed and stressed because she is in a hurry, and does not have time for cleaning up the mess. She continues cooking and eats her food. Coming home late after fitness, she cleans up the spilled soil. 2. Emilie on vacation – current scenario Through the summer Emilie is planning to go for a holiday. She would like to have a bit of a rest from her work, therefore she would like to take at least two weeks of vacation. She likes her herb. Therefore, she is concerned if they will dry out through the weeks. She was asking around her friends, if some of them could help her out watering them. Unfortunately, all of them are busy, so they cannot help.

The day for the vacation comes, and Emilie lives to Spain. She is having a fantastic time there, with a warm weather. After two weeks she arrives home. She enters the kitchen, when she realizes that all her herbs dried out and died. Emilie in the kitchen – future scenario 1.1 Emilie comes home late in the afternoon after work. She is in a hurry to cook before going to fitness training. While preparing the meal she moves around in the small kitchen and goes to the sink with a pot. After filling it with water she turns around to the stove and starts cooking. While cooking she needs to add herbs to the food. She turns to the kitchen table and reaches to the lamp over the table. She takes some few leaves from the plant and adds it to the food. On top of the lamp herbs are growing. The plants are growing well here and Emilie is very happy to have them here, because they are not occupying more space on her small kitchen table. At the same time, it gives a nice green look in the kitchen and she feels healthy. Now the herbs are not annoying to have around the kitchen, since they are not in the way for other important things. Emilie finish to cook and eat the food just before going to fitness. Everything is in time. Emilie on vacation – future scenario 2.1 Through the summer Emilie is planning to go for a holiday. She would like to have a bit of a rest from her work, therefore she would like to take at least two weeks of vacation. She likes her herbs and like to keep them after she comes home from the vacation. When going out the door she is not worried if the plants are going to dry out, since the automatic watering system is making sure the plants get the sufficient amount of water needed. The herbs are integrated plants under her desk that saves up a lot of space. At the same time, it looks nice in the apartment she thinks. Right before going out the door she fills the small tank under the table plate. This tank has very tiny holes that the water can enter through very slowly. In that way the plants will always have a sufficient amount of water. Emilie is going on vacation for two weeks, but the water tank only needs to be filled once a month, so Emilie can go for vacation relaxed and without worrying that her plants would die. Emilie in the kitchen – future scenario 1.2 Emilie comes home from work and in a hurry to cook something before her training. She is moving around in the kitchen to collect the ingredients. She is making an Italian tomato soup. Therefore, she needs to harvest some fresh oregano and basil. She walks to her unique designed kitchen chair, where the herbs are standing next to each other. Each herb has its own label, and its pot built in to the chair. Emilie likes the smart design of her chair, and thinks how great is it that the plants cannot tip over while she is harvesting them. She is chopping down required leaves, then dropping it into the soup. The soup is ready and then Emilie sits down to her favorite innovative chair to eat her dinner. She turns back and pick two more leaves from the back of the chair to decorate her soup. Emilie on vacation – future scenario 2.2 Emilie is going for a two-week vacation to Spain. She is excited about the preparations. She has carefully planned everything. Emilie likes when everything is in order, and under control. To ensure the health of her herbs, she is using the built in watering function of her herb chair. On the remote screen she is selecting a watering program for the plants, and set it for a two-week time period. The time has come, and Emilie leaves for her holiday. She is having a great time in Spain, the weather is stunning. Emilie arrives home and starting to pack out. She walks into the kitchen, when she delightedly sees that all her herbs are green and alive. This makes her happy. Side 6 af 9

Emilie in the kitchen – future scenario 1.3 Emilie comes home late in the afternoon after work. She is in a hurry to cook before going to fitness training. While preparing the meal she walks around the small kitchen gathering the ingredients she needs for the dish. As the meal is finished the walks over to the dining table to sit down. As she approached the table, she realizes that some fresh basil would be very nice. She places the plate of food on the table and slides open a small door on the side of the table. She pulls out a drawer from underneath the table. The drawer is full of different herbs and she quickly finds the basil she seeks. She cuts a small amount of basil and sprinkles on her meal. He closes the drawer, sits down, and eats her meal. Emilie on vacation – future scenario 2.3 Through the summer, Emilie is planning to go for a holiday. She would like to have a bit of a rest from her work, therefore she would like to take at least two weeks of vacation. She has many herbs in her apartment, which she uses every day for cooking. All her herbs are connected to an automated watering system, which means that they will not dry out when she goes on holiday. Emilie harvests all the herbs before she leaves. Her puts the harvest in the window I order to dry the herbs. The holiday is now over and she arrive home. The herbs placed in the window are now dry and she can use them for cooking later that day. The plants she harvested before she left are starting to grow back and will be ready the first harvest within a week.
Design brief Design Problem Statement Urban apartments are quite small today and it can be very hard to find space for growing your own herbs inside. Often the plants are in the way, or placed in an unwanted spot. Many people don’t want the plants to be disturbing or in the way for the desired arrangement and use of furniture. There is a lot of furniture in most apartments. They take up a lot of space in the room, but often contains a lot of unused space inside. Therefore, the goal for the design is to utilize the unused space in furniture to grow herbs. By making homegrown herbs, the goal is also to reduce the carbon foot print by home production.
Users Targeted users: Urban citizens living in apartments. User tasks: Growing herbs in their apartments User needs: Producing home grown pesticide free herbs with little to no carbon foot print. Existing solutions: • • •
Window farming Buying herbs and trash the plant after use (cradle to grave). Outdoor farming
Potential market: Urban citizens.

Success criteria’s The success criteria’s can be take directly from the conclusion from assignment 2: • • •
Unused space has to be utilized Continuous watering should be an integrated function. Soil should not be spilling from the plants and spread dirt.
Constrains The main solution and development process will be dedicated for the living room environment. Any solutions adapted for bedroom, bathroom and hallways will be neglected. The process will focus on three different types of furniture and they will be subjected for investigation. The investigation will only focus on growing herbs and the problems regarding this process and not vegetables.
