at Fay School Strengthening mathematics and science teaching, K-8
33rd Annual Science Workshop for K-8 Educators Sunday, June 21 - Friday, June 26, 2015 • Fay School, Southborough, MA About the Program The Science Workshop is an intensive, invigorating, interactive fiveday experience where you will be a learner and teacher-researcher as you extend your own understanding of science concepts and teaching strategies. Enjoy the lovely Fay School campus in Southborough, Massachusetts, and spend mealtimes talking with colleagues about new ideas and extensions of old ones. This week-long workshop will focus on: • Working with hands-on materials and science activities and the thinking processes to make sense of them.
• Launching an all day field trip to a local park to study pond ecology and related classroom activities that might be used in a thematic study of water or pond ecosystems.
• Plumbing the depths of the “tried and true,” such as batteries and bulbs, acid/base chemistry, and studying living creatures.
• Exploring the engineering process using recycled materials as well as commercial kits such as LEGOs, LINX, and Little Bits.
• Using technology tools and Internet resources to promote science understanding. • Keeping current with what research has to say about practices that promote access to science for all and curriculum that is aligned with national standards.
• Extending one’s own understanding of science education by providing a forum for discussion and reflection about teaching, assessing, finding materials, refining curriculum, and holding our work up to the light of standards.
