Game Notes 8Opening Pitch: These two teams are battling for seeding in the upcoming MidAmerican Conference Tournament. The Cardinals started the league season at 0-6, but have since rebounded and currently sit fourth in the standings at 8-7. Northern Illinois is right behind Ball State at 6-6 in MAC play. The Huskies began league action with a sweep of Toledo. Since then, NIU has gone 3-6 against MAC opponents. Ball State is batting a league-best .316 in conference games. Meanwhile, Northern Illinois’ 3.55 team ERA is third best in league games. 8Series History: Northern Illinois took two of three games from Ball State last year for the first time since 2011. Between 2012 and 2015, the Cardinals took 10 of 12 games from NIU. The two teams will meet at NIU for the second straight year. Ball State leads the alltime series by a count of 48-34-1. 8Double Trouble for the Opposition: The Cardinals lead the MAC in doubles (81) and have hit at least one double in 12 consecutive games. Ball State tallied a season-high seven doubles in the win over Valparaiso on April 11. Four players have at least 10 doubles led by INF Seth Freed with 12 two-baggers.

8Giving the Big Ten Big Fits: Ball State is 2-3 against Big Ten foes this year, but could easily be 4-1. Two of Ball State’s three losses have come against Indiana, which is No. 26 in the RPI rankings, in extra innings. The Cardinals defeated Big Ten leader Maryland as well as Purdue earlier in the year. 8Back-to-Back For Kennedy: Senior INF Sean Kennedy has been named MAC West Player of the Week for two consecutive weeks. He hit .714 (10-of-14) in the series against Bowling Green on April 14-15. In game two of that series, he went 5-for-5 with three home runs, a triple, a double and nine RBIs. Kennedy set a program record with 17 total bases. On April 18, Kennedy propelled Ball State to a 5-3 win over Purdue with a leadoff home run in the top of the 12th inning. 8Burns Returning to Rotation: Junior RHP Brendan Burns is set to make his first league start of the season this weekend. Burns has made two midweek starts – March 28 versus Butler and April 18 at Purdue. On April 23 at Buffalo, Burns tossed 6.1 innings in relief and struck out seven batters, one shy of his career best. Burns made six MAC starts in 2016 and went 2-2 with a 4.39 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched.

2017 Ball State Baseball Game Notes Game Notes 8Going Streaking: C/1B Caleb Stayton might have seen his hitting streak (14) come to an end Tuesday versus Indiana, but he has still reached base in 21 straight games. He has tallied a walk in four straight games including three times at Buffalo on April 23. 810 Hits a Good Sign: The Cardinals have tallied at least 10 hits in 14 games this season and have won them all. Ball State has been held to nine, nine and six hits the previous three games. 8Scoring Early Equals Wins: Ball State is 15-6 when scoring first and 6-14 when the opposition scores first. The Cardinals have been solid at holding leads as well, going 20-2 when leading after seven innings. 8Quality Bullpen Performance: The Ball State bullpen held Purdue without an earned run in nine innings pitched on April 18. At one point, the Cardinals retired 15 consecutive Purdue batters. Sophomore RHP Nick Floyd earned his first collegiate win by holding Purdue off the scoreboard in the 11th and 12th innings. 8Mr. Reliable: Senior OF Matt Eppers made his 150th consecutive start last weekend at Buffalo. He started the streak on Feb. 21, 2015 against Elon by going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Head Coach Rich Maloney Rich Maloney, head coach at Ball State, won his 700th game as a collegiate head coach in 2015. He is in his second head coaching stint at BSU, originally serving from 1996-2002 and returning in 2013. He has led Ball State to four MAC regular season titles, six MAC West Divison crowns and its only two 40-win seasons in program history (1997, 1999). He was honored with FCA Baseball’s Jerry Kindall Award in January 2017. The 2016 season was another successful one for Ball State as the Cardinals won the MAC West Division title for the second time in three years. Maloney helped guide outfielder Alex Call to MAC Player of the Year accolades. Following the season, four Cardinals were taken in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, the most by any school in the MAC. Not only did Ball State produce on the field, but also in the classroom. Two players were named first team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans – Call and Caleb Stayton. A year before, the Cardinals made a late season surge and reached the 2015 MAC Tournament

Eppers is hitting a team-best .439 (25-of57) against league foes and also leads the team with 19 runs scored. He is riding a 12game hitting streak entering the weekend. 8The ‘200’ Club: Seniors Alex Maloney and Sean Kennedy each recently played their 200th game in a Ball State uniform. Maloney has played in 210 career games entering the weekend. He ranks second the team in home runs (eight) and RBIs (31). Kennedy, who has played in 208 career games, leads the team with 18 multi-hit games. He has also made starts at every position on the infield this season. 8Season Highs: The 23 runs scored and 19 hits against Bowling Green on April 15 were both season highs for Ball State. Senior INF Sean Kennedy racked up three home runs while senior 1B Caleb Stayton and sophomore C Griffin Hulecki each notched their first long ball of the season in the 23-5 win. The 23 runs were the most for Ball State since scoring 32 at Bowling Green in 2010. 8Holding Down the Hoosiers: RHP John Baker had a terrific performance at Indiana on April 4. At one point, Baker retired 14 straight Hoosiers. His final stat line was 6.0+ innings pitched, four hits, two runs and six strikeouts. Baker is 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA and 24 championship game. In 2014, Maloney led Ball State to the MAC regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014). From 2003-12, Maloney was the head coach at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines to three Big Ten conference titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney has mentored 61 players who have been drafted, including five first round selections. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No. 1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history. Maloney was an All-American collegiate baseball player at Western Michigan and spent six seasons playing in the Atlanta Braves organization. He is currently serving as the ABCA second vice president. Maloney, and his wife, the former Kelle Lynn Seitz, have two sons -- Alex and Nicholas -- and one daughter, Natalie. Alex is a senior member of the 2017 Ball State baseball team.

Success in the Classroom Ball State was one of 30 teams to earn an inaugural American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award last spring thanks to posting a team GPA above 3.0. Four Cardinals were tabbed as MAC Baseball Distinguished Scholar Athletes following the completion of the 2016 season. – 4 –

Game Notes 8Trip, Trip, Triple: Senior OF Matt Eppers registered two triples against Purdue on March 22. He now has 17 career triples, which ranks second in the Ball State record books. Eppers led the MAC with seven triples in 2015. 8Butler Comes Up With a First: Senior RHP BJ Butler picked up his first collegiate complete game shutout in the 6-0 win over Dayton on March 18. Butler equaled his career high with nine strikeouts. He is the first Ball State pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since Zach Plesac beat Miami (Ohio) on March 26, 2016. 8Milestone for Maloney: Head coach Rich Maloney reached 400 career wins at Ball State in the 6-0 win over Dayton on March 18. This is Maloney’s second stint as the Cardinals’ head coach and his 12th year overall with Ball State. He is 412-257-1 (.616) at Ball State and 753-501-1 (.600) overall as a head coach. 8Quality Competition: The Cardinals faced two teams during the non-conference portion of the schedule that have gone on to achieve the No. 1 national ranking this spring – Louisville and Oregon State. Those two teams currently hold the top two spots in the majority of the baseball polls. Ball State also faced defending NCAA champion Coastal Carolina in late February. 8A Near No-Hitter: Junior RHP Colin Brockhouse carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against West Virginia on Feb. 26. He finished with a stat line of 8.0 innings pitched, two runs, three hits and a career-high nine strikeouts. Ball State’s most recent no-hitter came in a five-inning game against Taylor University on April 11, 1996. 8Wins Vs. Ranked Teams: Thanks to an 8-3 win over No. 22 Maryland in the season opener, Ball State has now tallied at least one win over a ranked team in five straight seasons. Below are the wins over ranked programs since 2009: 2/17/17: 8-3 vs. #22 Maryland 3/11/16: 7-1 at #6 LSU 2/28/15: 2-1 vs. #25 Illinois 3/7/14: 10-8 (10) at #22 Kentucky 4/17/13: 5-3 at #19 Indiana 2/20/10: 5-2 at #15 Arkansas 3/20/10: 5-1 at #7 Louisville 4/22/09: 20-8 at #23 Ohio State
