Beneficial Practices – Steam Generator Management • Mitigation Practices: – SG blowdown mod and improved impurity flushing (Temelin) – Minimized corrosion product transport (Paks) • Electromagnetic filters in feedwater system • Octadecylamine (ODA) inhibits moisture build-up during shutdown and layup

• Inspection Techniques: – Air-assisted ECT probe insertion system reduces probe usage; increases speed (Palo Verde) – Array coil probes for 100% SG ECT scope eliminates special interest testing (Takahama, Prairie Island) © Copyright 2016 Institute of Nuclear Power Operations

Beneficial Practices – Steam Generator Management • Conservative pri/sec action limits (Paks) – First alert at 1 liter per hour (6 gpd) – Second alert at 2 liters per hour (13 gpd) – Shutdown at 5 liters per hour (32 gpd)

• Steam generator mock-ups (Paks, Palo Verde) – For training, practicing, ALARA, and qualifying inspection techniques

Beneficial Practices – Chemistry • Online monitoring equipment – Mihama • Fleet standardization – Kalinin • Resin test flow-loop – Kashiwazaki-Kariwa • Public engagement – chemistry pamphlet – TEPCO • Station engagement for asset preservation – Paks, Temelin, Kuosheng, KashiwazakiKariwa, Kalinin © Copyright 2016 Institute of Nuclear Power Operations

General Observations

• In contrast with U.S. plants, which often

rely on engineering evaluations, non-U.S. stations have a bias to: – Prevent and correct undesirable conditions • For example, boric acid leaks • For example, steam generator loose parts

– Replace components using improved designs • For example, thermal fatigue © Copyright 2016 Institute of Nuclear Power Operations
