Martha and Mary, together with their brother, Lazarus, hosted Jesus and his followers many times in their home near Jericho. It appears that Jesus was quite comfortable in their home, speaking freely to all who would listen. Martha, the oldest of the three, took responsibility for managing the household. When Jesus arrived, Martha would scurry around cleaning and preparing a meal for Jesus and his followers. Mary, on the other hand, would sit at Jesus’ knee and listen to His teachings. Martha became upset and complained to Jesus that Mary was not helping as she should. Jesus responded, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42. The New Oxford Annotated Bible Revised Standard Version. Jesus ignored the traditional role for women, and instead, encouraged Mary to act like other disciples, and sit and listen. Some time later, Lazarus fell ill and died. Martha & Mary sent for Jesus, hoping for a miracle, but Jesus did not come right in time. Four days after Lazarus’ death, Martha met Jesus on the road and admonished Him for His tardiness. Jesus responded, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,” John 11:25. Martha responded, confirming her belief in Jesus the Savior, and Jesus, indeed, raised Lazarus from the dead. Both lessons learned from the stories of Martha & Mary are extremely important. The first lesson is to not worry about the little things, but rather concentrate on what is important. The second lesson learned is the most important lesson of all: if we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we, too, will have everlasting life.

Block 31: Martha & Mary Finished 10”
I chose the Frayed Four Patch to represent Martha & Mary because the block design is reminiscent of the relationship of the women. As sisters, they led complementary lives that were forever intertwined.
