Jezebel was a Phoenician princess, the pampered daughter of the King and Queen of Sidon, a coastal city-state. Her parents arranged a marriage for her with Ahab, the King of Israel. Like her parents, Jezebel was a priestess and worshiped Baal, an agricultural God. At the time of her marriage to Ahab, Jezebel remained true to her faith and converted Ahab to also worship Baal. As King and Queen, they led many Israelites in the worship of Baal. A severe drought and famine afflicted the area. A contest formed between Jezebel and the prophet, Elijah. When Elijah’s God won the contest and ended the drought, Elijah and his followers murdered 450 Baal priests and followers. Jezebel threatened Elijah and promised to avenge their deaths. Elijah fled the area, but God promised Elijah that He would reclaim the kingdom of Israel. Jezebel has been nicknamed “the wicked queen.” She believed that she and Ahab had supreme power and authority. Ahab wanted to claim a vineyard in the northern part of the land, but the owner would not give it up. Jezebel planted evidence against the owner and his sons. They were tried and executed, and Ahab got his vineyard, which later became a military stronghold. An ambitious military officer, Jehu, was supported by the prophet Elisha, staged a coup to destroy the royal family and claim the kingdom of Israel for God. Jezebel dressed in her full queen regalia, painted her face and waited for her imminent death. At Jehu’s bidding, her servants threw her down from her tower, and she died a spectacular death. Jezebel believed that her position in life made her better than others. We all know people who believe that they, too, are better than their peers or co-workers. Sometimes we respond with jealousy, anger, or both, and our actions betray our faith in God to grant us all that we need to live the life that he calls us to lead.
