Belichick avoids queries on QBs Coach wants team to focus on Miami THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Home stage next for Garoppolo

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — New England Patriots quarterback Tom PATRIOTS Brady is three weeks from re- NOTEBOOK turning from his four-game Deflategate suspension, but some have already started to wonder what the future holds for the quarterback position in New England given Jimmy Garoppolo’s impressive first start. Hard as it may be to believe, Bill Belichick was asked in his Wednesday press conference how many calls he’d already taken from teams asking about possible trades for either Brady or Garoppolo. “Yeah, we’re really just focused on getting ready for Miami,” Belichick said. “That’s what we’ve been working on. That’s what we plan on working on all week.” One of the subjects of the premature trade talk, the guy who will go back to being New England’s backup after Week 4, was asked if it will be harder to accept that role given the early success and joy he’s encountered as a starter. “I don’t know. We’ll cross that when we get there, I guess,” Garroppolo said. “For now, it is what it is.”

BOSTON — Mark Trumbo took it upon himself to hang the “1” in Rick Porcello’s 13-1 record at Fenway Park. Trumbo hit a towering solo home run in the second inning off the Boston Red Sox’s ace and that proved to be enough for the Baltimore Orioles in their 1-0 victory on Wednesday night. “We’re obviously very much aware that he’s had a tremendous season,” Trumbo said. “Whether it be at this park or another one, we still have a job to do.” Trumbo blasted a first-pitch slider from Porcello an estimated 448 feet for a homer that easily

cleared the Green Monster in left field to lead off the second. It was his major league-leading 42nd homer of the year and his 100th RBI of 2016, tying a career high set during his 34-homer season with the Los Angeles Angels in 2013. Baltimore (80-65) moved within a game of first-place Boston (81-64) in the American League East after the Toronto Blue Jays — who began the day tied for second with the Orioles — were blown out by the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in the day. “To think that you could make one run stand up in this ballpark that’s got an offensive team that they are is a real tribute to how well Kevin (Gausman) and Zach

(Britton) pitched,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. The Red Sox have lost back-toback games after clocking the O’s 12-2 in the series opener on Monday. “This is going to be a hardfought division right to the final game of the season,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “We fully embrace it.” Gausman (8-10) outdueled Porcello, the majors’ first 20-game winner, tossing eight scoreless innings while allowing four hits and one walk and striking out six. Britton shut down the Red Sox in the ninth to convert his 43rd straight save opportunity to start the year, a major league record for See Red Sox, Page B8

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — The four-game Jimmy Garoppolo Era moves to the home stage when the New England Patriots host the Miami Dolphins in an AFC game on Sunday. Garoppolo, who made his first NFL start in the first game of Tom Brady’s Deflategate absence last Sunday night at Arizona, opened eyes all around the league play in leading the Patriots to their narrow opening win over the Cardinals. Including Brady. “It was a great night for him and for our whole offense,” Brady told Westwood One Radio on his weekly Monday Night Football interview. “I think one thing you realize as the quarterback is everyone being in sync and on the same page and the communication with your teammates is so critical. “For us to go in there and get a win like that, it was great for, obviously, our offensive football team. The defense played great, special teams. It’s such a team sport. Jimmy did everything he was asked to. It was a great way to start the season for our team.” Garoppolo, who threw for 264 yards and a touchdown and had a 106.1 quarterback rating, has three home games left before Brady returns for the Oct. 9 game at Cleveland. Ex-manager La Russa rips Trojans eager to battle Black Raiders Kaepernick for protesting BY ERNIE CLARK BDN STAFF

Baseball Hall of Famer Tony La Russa termed the national anthem protests of Colin Kaepernick “disrespectful” and said he doubts the NFL quarterback’s sincerity, according to Sports Illustrated Now. Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has been taking a knee during the anthem as a protest to bring attention to racial injustice. La Russa, currently a highranking executive with the Arizona Diamondbacks, isn’t buying Kaepernick’s actions. “I was there in the Bay Area when he first was a star, a real star. I never once saw him do anything but promote himself,” La Russa said. “And all of a sudden now he’s a second-stringer and he’s got this mission … and I just don’t trust his sincerity. “And even if he was sincere, there’s ways to express your belief in some of the issues that face

blacks around this country without disrespecting the country you live in or the flag that it represents.” La Russa won two World Series titles as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and one as manager of the Oakland Athletics. He said he “absolutely would not allow” a player on his squad to disrespect the national anthem. “I would tell (them to) sit inLa Russa side the clubhouse,” La Russa said. “You’re not going to be out there representing our team and our organization by disrespecting the flag. No, sir, I would not allow it. … “If you want to make your statement, you make it in the clubhouse, but not out there. You’re not going to show it that way pubSee La Russa, Page B7
