BURLINGAME GIRLS SOFTBALL PLAYING UP/DOWN POLICY Following is the policy regarding BGS’s position on playing up or down. This policy will be in force for the 2012 season and thereafter, until amended. All parents have the option to request that their child be allowed to play up or down one age division. They may do so by filling out and submitting the related form, along with their child’s registration form at any of the league’s sign ups. All children should be registered in their natural age division until approval is obtained to play up/down from the board. In addition, players will be required to attend a mandatory assessment to evaluate their playing ability and any potential safety concerns. All requests submitted to the Board will be considered at some time after the final registration date but prior to team draws. A majority vote by the Board is required for a request to be approved. Board members that are relatives of the requestor should sustain from voting. It should be remembered that BGS is a recreational league. Its mission is to provide an environment where youth, ages 5 through 14, can have fun developing their skills, knowledge and appreciation for the game of softball. A component to creating a successful environment is the establishment of appropriate age divisions. Dividing players into appropriate age divisions will, in most cases, provide at least two significant benefits: 1) skill levels amongst the players have a greater chance of being similar; and 2) social interaction amongst players will likely be enhanced. The board’s decision to allow a child to play up or down is very important. Legitimate safety concerns for a player or for those with whom they will be playing, are the most compelling reasons to allow a player to play up or down. All other reasons provided should be considered very carefully, if not skeptically. Convenience or an overzealous emphasis on skills development should Never be considered as an appropriate reasons to allow a child to play up or down.
