Holiday Cheer Materials for Four Red Large Placemats

4. Referring to the diagram below, arrange (2) white harlequin flying geese units, (2) gray branches flying geese units, and (1) tree trunk unit, alternating the two types of flying geese units as shown, and placing the tree trunk unit at the base. Stitch the units together to make (1) tree unit measuring 6½" x 15½", from raw edge to raw edge in both directions. Repeat to make a total of (4) identical units.

Cutting Instructions for Four Red Large Placemats Please note: all strips, except for the printed stripe, are cut across the width of the fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge.

From the red snowflakes, cut: (8) 2¼" strips for binding. From the red trees, cut: (2) 15½" strips. Recut into (4) 12½" x 15½" piece. From the red scroll, cut: (1) 3½" strip. Recut into (4) 2½" x 3½" pieces. (4) 1½" strips. Recut into (8) 1½" x 15½" pieces. From EACH of the white harlequin and gray branches, cut: (2) 3½" strips. Recut into (8) 3½" x 6½" pieces. From the gray tonal, cut: (4) 3½" strips. Recut into (8) 2½" x 3½" pieces and (32) 3½" x 3½" squares.

Sewing Instructions for the Red Large Plaecmats All seams are sewn using 1/4" seam allowance with pieces held right sides together and raw edges even.

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a 3½" gray tonal square. Right sides together, layer the marked square on one end of a 3½" x 6½" green branches piece, noting orientation. Sew on the marked line. Trim 1/4" beyond the seam line and press the resulting white triangle up to make the unit shown. Repeat this procedure for the opposite end of the green branches piece to complete (1) flying geese unit. Repeat to make a total of (8) identical units.

From the printed panel, cut: (4) 10½" x 10½" squares, fussy cut, with a printed motif centered in both directions in each square. From the red OR blue trees, cut: (1) 12½" strip. Recut into (8) 3½" x 12½" pieces. From the red snowflakes OR green scroll, cut: (7) 2¼" strips for the binding. (5) 1½" strips. Recut into (8) 1½" x 12½" and (8) 1½" x 10½" pieces.

Sewing Instructions for the Small Placemats All seams are sewn using 1/4" seam allowance with pieces held right sides together and raw edges even.

1. Stitch 1½" x 10½" red snowflakes OR green scroll pieces to the left and right sides of a 10½" trimmed printed panel square. Sew 1½" x 12½" red snowflakes OR green scroll pieces to the top and bottom of the trimmed square. 2. Stitch a 3½" x 12½" red trees OR blue trees piece to the left and right sides of the printed panel square unit from step 1, noting orientation of the printed motifs in all units. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a total of (4) placemat fronts.
