Essential Living Funds Together, we create an environment for all Cal Poly students to reach their full potential and thrive. Along this journey, many students are unable to afford essential living expenses, core to their ongoing success.
AREAS OF SUPPORT Housing & Meal Plans Students need a safe place to live and nutritious meals each day in order to focus on their education. Recent studies show that students who live on campus at Cal Poly during their first and second years, receive better grades and are more likely to complete degrees than students living off campus. This fund supports students with essential living needs by providing annual on-campus housing and meal plans.

To ensure Cal Poly attracts and retains the most qualified students, we grant Cal Poly Scholar Awards to outstanding first-time freshmen, selected from among National Merit Scholars. These awards help cover the cost of housing for up to five years of continuous enrollment and will reduce a student’s need for Cal Poly Cares support.

Personal Care Basic hygiene and personal care are essential for student health and wellbeing. Our Cal Poly Health Educators guide students as they develop each year and find many students do not have resources for these basic needs. This fund helps these students obtain everyday essential toiletries and personal hygiene products throughout the year.

CAL POLY CARES AREAS OF SUPPORT Academic Supplies and Materials Cal Poly students pay approximately $500 each quarter on required textbooks for their academic field of study, with additional expenses for necessary course materials, supplies and technology. For some of our talented students with high need, these expenses can create obstacles to compete and succeed academically. This fund helps these students purchase essential learning tools. Estimated annual student award= $2,000
Professional Clothing Cal Poly attracts world-renown companies and organizations that recruit our outstanding students for internships and full-time careers. Our Career Center prepares students for these opportunities with resume-writing and interviewing skills; however, some students are faced with the financial hardship buying professional clothing to move forward. This fund will support students with these career essentials. Estimated annual student award= $600
Student Emergency Grants Throughout their Cal Poly experience, students may incur unplanned expenses and require immediate funds, including car repairs, travel home for emergency family situations and other urgent needs. This fund provides one-time grants to cover the expenses of a temporary hardship for high-need students. Estimated annual student award= $500
