2014 CAPUCHON RESERVE “ROI DU NORD” SYRAH Santa Ynez Valley, California Capuchon is our homage to Rhône varietals and winemaking, and we sourced the Capuchon "Roi du Nord" from the John Sebastiano Vineyard in Santa Rita Hills. Named for the king varietal of the Northern Rhône, this cool-climate Syrah has a radiant purple color with a neon-red rim. On the nose, fresh-cracked black pepper, tobacco, black cherry, spice, olive tapenade, and rhubarb jump from the glass. Notes of white pepper, red cassis, raspberry compote, bacon fat, and sea salt permeate the palate, accompanied by medium-plus acid and tannins. Located on the eastern side of the Santa Rita Hills A.V.A., the marine-influenced John Sebastiano Vineyard is particularly windy and surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean. Its soil composition consists of a topsoil of clay and loam with underlying mother-rock of limestone.
