7th September 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, I write to you regarding an exciting opportunity. As you are aware, with the changes in the post-16 curriculum, it has become increasingly important for Year 11 students to demonstrate their academic potential with their GCSE results. With this in mind, the University of Birmingham is organising an event that concentrates on getting students who will be sitting their GCSEs in 2017 to start thinking about the importance that the next nine months will play in determining their future aspirations. It is aimed at pupils aiming for 9-7s in their final examinations and/or those who aspire to attend University. The Achieve Conference will focus on getting students to learn about the importance of their GCSE qualifications, what Russell Group universities look for and what sixth forms and colleges expect from pre-16 students. The messages from the day are deliberately designed to make students aware that Year 11 is a time that they need to focus their efforts and minds in order to achieve their target grades, if not to exceed them. The event will be held on the University of Birmingham Edgbaston campus on Friday 15th September. The cost of the trip is £12.00 to cover the conference and transport to and from the University. There will be a charge of £5.00 for pupils in receipt of pupil premium. The trip is limited to 40 pupils and, if oversubscribed, will be selected at random. If your child is not selected, I will use the resources from the day to deliver the key messages in school at a later time. Your child will need to attend in school uniform and will need to take a packed lunch with them. If your child is in receipt of pupil premium, then lunch can be provided. The trip will run in school hours, leaving at 9am and returning by 3pm. We will notify you if travel disruptions take place. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions. I would be grateful if you could return the attached reply slip by Monday 10th September if you wish your child to take part in this event. Yours sincerely,
