Cat Checkerboard

Scissors Sewing machine Sewing thread Sewing needle Tracing paper #2 pencil Lightweight cardboard Washable fabric marking pencil Straight pins Small crochet hook Ruler or measuring tape Basket (for storing Cats when not in use) 1" metal rings (for crowning Cats) 1 yd ‑ ⅝"w grosgrain ribbon (for tying metal rings together) ¾ yd ‑ 44/45"w print fabric #1 for Cats ¾ yd ‑ 44/45"w print fabric #2 for Cats ⅜ yd ‑ 44/45"w print fabric #3 for bow ties and Checkerboard border ¼ yd ‑ 44/45"w solid fabric #1 for Checkerboard ¼ yd ‑ 44/45"w solid fabric #2 for Checkerboard ⅝ yd ‑ 44/45"w sturdy fabric for Checkerboard backing 21" x 24" piece of thin batting 4 yds ‑ ⅛"w satin ribbon for bow ties 24 ‑ 1⅜" metal washers Polyester fiberfill Clear‑drying craft glue

4. Baste ½" from open edge of Cat Body. Turn raw edge to wrong side along basting line. Stuff Cat Body with fiberfill to basting line. Do not overstuff. Place washer in bottom of Cat Body. 5. Use Cat Bottom template to draw twelve Cat Bottoms on wrong side of each remaining piece of Cat fabric, leaving at least 1" between drawn shapes. Cut out Cat Bottoms ½" outside pencil lines. 6. Baste each Cat Bottom along pencil line. Pull basting thread slightly; press raw edge to wrong side along basting line. 7. Pin wrong side of Cat Bottom over opening in Cat Body. Whipstitch in place. 8. For bow tie, cut a 4" x 2¼" piece of fabric. Press long edges ¾" to wrong side. Press short edges 1" to wrong side. Tie a 6" piece of ⅛"w ribbon around center, with knot on wrong side. Trim ends of ribbon close to knot. Refer to photo to glue bow tie to Cat.

INSTRUCTIONS CATS

1. Place tracing paper over patterns for Cat Body and Cat Bottom; trace and cut out patterns. Place patterns on cardboard and draw around shapes. Cut out cardboard templates along drawn lines. 2. For Cat Bodies, cut each Cat fabric into twelve 10"w x 6½"h rectangles. Lay remaining fabric aside for Cat Bottoms. Fold each rectangle in half, matching short edges and right sides. Center Cat Body template on each rectangle and draw around template. 3. For each Cat Body, leave lower edge open and sew folded fabric together directly on pencil line. Trim seam allowance to ¼" and clip curves. Trim lower edge along pencil line. Turn right side out, using rounded end of crochet hook to completely turn small areas. LeisureArtsLibrary.com • #800456

5. For border, cut two pieces of fabric 1½"w and the height of the Checkerboard block. Sew strips to sides of Checkerboard block (Fig. 4). Press seam allowances toward attached strips. Cut two pieces of fabric 3½"w and the width of the block including attached strips. Sew strips to top and bottom of block (Fig. 5). Press seam allowances toward attached strips.

1. Cut four 2½" x 22" strips from each solid fabric. 2. (Note: Use a ¼" seam allowance on all seams.) Match right sides and raw edges and sew strips together, alternating colors of strips (Fig. 1). Press seam allowances toward darker strips. Fig. 1

4. Position strips as shown in Fig. 3. Sew strips together, being careful to align all seams. Press seam allowances to one side. Fig. 3

6. For backing, cut piece of backing fabric same size as Checkerboard top. Cut a piece of batting same size as backing. Baste batting to wrong side of Checkerboard top. Place Checkerboard top and backing right sides together; stitch together, leaving opening for turning. Trim batting from seam allowance. Trim corners and turn right side out, carefully pushing corners outward. Whipstitch opening closed. Remove basting threads.
