THE VISION

THE BENEFACTOR

THE FUTURE

When Bob Goin was hired as Director of Athletics at the University of Cincinnati in 1997, he saw a program tall in history and tradition, but short in facilities. At the time, UC had only one Division I facility, the Shoemaker Center (home of today’s Fifth Third Arena). Reviewing the Bearcat facilities while driving to his office one morning, Goin realized that something had to be done and shortly after that drive, a vision was born. The vision was built on UC’s rich athletics tradition, its importance as a leading research university, and Cincinnati’s pride in all things Bearcat. The next step was to build the infrastructure.

The Lindner name is synonymous with great things in Greater Cincinnati and the family’s generosity is very apparent on the UC campus as well. When the vision for Varsity Village was taking shape, Goin reached out to Richard Lindner to jumpstart the dream. Believing in the future of UC Athletics, the Lindners agreed to take a leadership role and the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village was born.

Another key element of the Varsity Village vision was to position the University of Cincinnati’s athletics program as a leader in intercollegiate athletics. Opportunity arrived in 2003, when the BIG EAST Conference came looking for strong institutions to move into the highprofile league.

“I felt that once we got the infrastructure put together with a lot of tremendous people, the bricks and mortar would follow,” Goin said in reflecting on those early years at UC. “I wanted to have a village which would bring everyone together and give our coaches and student-athletes one central location to make themselves better and create a great athletic atmosphere for the University of Cincinnati.”

Mr. Lindner’s gift was announced in Spring 2003. This gift, in addition to a significant gift from Fifth Third Bank, allowed the university to start construction of the project. At the announcement of his gift, Richard Lindner acknowledged his brothers Carl and Robert for their assistance and financial backing. He noted that this mutual support has made many accomplishments a reality. The Lindner family can now add the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village to that list. “So many people helped us out and got excited about our facilities for the future,” Goin said. “I cannot thank the Lindner family enough for their support and generosity and belief in our vision. Fifth Third Bank also played a significant role in Varsity Village becoming a reality.”

Varsity Village demonstrated UC’s commitment to a high-level, quality Division I athletics program. New Director of Athletics Mike Thomas said, “I know the BIG EAST was impressed with UC as a whole. The campus transformation, including Varsity Village, made us an excellent choice for inclusion in the BIG EAST.” With the opening of Varsity Village, UC is becoming a “first choice” school for student-athletes too, not only in Ohio, but throughout the nation. Bearcat fans everywhere can point with pride to the University of Cincinnati, a premier urban institution with first-class, big-time athletics facilities.
