This is an advanced skills course designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitude to become some of Australia’s strongest Outdoor Leaders. We have a reputation for producing high quality Outdoor Skills Instructors, with an opportunity to focus on bushwalking, kayaking, white-water rafting, abseiling & climbing.
The course will focus on:
developing and coordinating outdoor programs extended trip planning leading, instructing and facilitating groups; program risk management expeditions medicine coordinating emergency response challenging bushwalking navigation and weather interpretation skills in challenging environmental conditions flat-water kayak instruction white water kayaking and rafting swift-water rescue rock-climbing and abseiling guiding vertical rescue introduction to sea kayaking
The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation course at the Drysdale South Campus consists of the following subjects: Develop work priorities Provide first aid Plan outdoor recreation activities Manage risk in an outdoor activity Develop and coordinate programs incorporating outdoor activities Interpret weather conditions in the field Apply search and rescue skills Address client needs
Respond to emergency situations Promote compliance with laws and legal principles Conduct projects Implement and monitor occupational health and safety policies Support implementation of environmental management practices Use resources efficiently Provide work skill instruction Expedition Medicine Search & Rescue Bushwalking Stream
Students will specialise in the following: Flatwater Kayak Instructor Stream White-water Kayak Guide Stream White-water Raft Stream or Abseil Guide Stream Top Rope Climbing Guide Stream
SUITABILITY Attendance at an interview is essential. As we train people for work as well rounded outdoor leaders we are looking for applicants who exhibit the following attributes: Completion of previous training in Guiding or Outdoor Recreation Worked as a commercial guide for a minimum of 12 months Worked or trained as a teacher Undertakes regular outdoor pursuits in their personal time

DELIVERY

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures held at the Drysdale South campus and participation in practical workshops held at a wide range of field sites in Southern and Eastern Tasmania. The program includes a substantial practical component at field sites around Tasmania and includes the:
Mersey River Picton River Derwent Estuary Freycinet National Park Central Highlands Mt. Wellington
Students must be prepared to camp in semi-remote and remote locations for the duration of the field trips. Students will be required to self-cater meals (at their own expense). Students are also expected to have their own outdoor camping gear. NB: We are able to assist with the purchasing of equipment through special deals with our industry partners. ______________________________________________ ASSESSMENT Students’ knowledge and skills are assessed throughout the course. Assessments will consist of a range of methods: Assignments & project work Written and verbal questions Practical exercises Practical demonstrations Scenarios Employability skills Demonstration of activity skills, group management and emergency management skills ___________________________________________
