Boroway ’73 Elected Alumni Corp. President Brothers, I am honored to be reporting to you as alumni corporation president for the first time in 25 years. Many of you know that I have been actively involved with the board over that span, mostly as corporation treasurer and financial advisor. I was happy to work behind the scenes and help in any way I could, but Delta Chapter is at an intriguing crossroads and I wanted to play a more active role right now. Maybe it’s my turning 60 this year, or maybe a reaction to some recent health issues, but I promise to do everything in my power to help us take the next step forward. The “crossroads” I mentioned is made up of a couple of elements. First, after three straight successful recruiting years (including more than 20 pledges this fall, the most in decades!), it appears that the chapter house might be completely full next year, for the first time since the late ’90s. Second, we are at a pause in the Capital
Campaign projects—we’ve completed Phase 1 (parking lot) and Phase 2 (kitchen) and now must wait at least until summer of 2013 to do Phase 3 (bedrooms, showers, and windows) due to the pace of the rest of the pledged campaign gifts coming in. Third, due to both of the prior factors, an unusual amount of guidance will be needed to help the undergrads transition into this full-house situation, on a number of levels. Your alumni board looks forward to these challenges. As for the board itself, I would like to personally thank Nate Doyle ’02 and Craig Woolhiser ’86 for their four years of service that just ended. Nate has been president for the past two years and instrumental in putting the chapter on its current path, and Craig has tirelessly worked as both the Delta Dial editor (which he has thankfully volunteered to continue) and as alumni communications point man. Chapter Hosts Successful Alumni Weekend Thanks to all the brothers and guests who helped make Theta Chi Alumni Weekend 2011 a great success. The weekend started with a good turnout at the Homecoming football game, where our RPI Engineers beat St. Lawrence 14-7. RPI was led defensively by brother Cody Hinrichs ’13, who had six tackles and tallied one and a half sacks, and offensively by quarterback Mike Hermann ’13,
who threw both RPI touchdowns. As with past years, there are many Delta Chapter actives on the team, with a solid group of them being starters. The next portion of the day was spent enjoying conversation, cocktails, and dinner at Revolution Hall in downtown Troy. We had a (continued on page four)

Updates From the Undergrads Brothers, I am pleased to report that things are looking up at 2100 Burdett Avenue. We have a class of more than 20 pledges joining our already crowded house, and I feel it is safe to say that we have re-emerged as a dominant house on campus. Many brothers from the chapter still participate in RPI football, and quarterback Mike Hermann ’13 was just named the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year. In my first weeks as president, I have already noticed a remarkable rise in school-function attendance from our chapter. Several brothers attended the Greek Hockey Night, where Theta Chi and other fraternities and sororities were recognized, and several brothers introduced themselves to Greek Dean of Students Matt Hunt. He was pleased with the gentlemen that he met, and his positive reaction is only the start of great things to
come in the next year. We look forward to working closely with the administration. As far as philanthropy is concerned, several brothers have donated to the “Bike for Ben” cause, which provides medical aid to an SAE brother who was injured in a tragic accident. The school as a community has really rallied around this event, and Theta Chi is happy to have contributed. The renovations to the house are noticeable and much appreciated. On behalf of the undergraduate brothers, thank you for all of your tireless efforts and donations to help make our experience the best it could possibly be. The kitchen is in the best shape I’ve seen, and I can only speculate as to how great the rest of the renovations will turn out. I am sure that they will not disappoint. Delta Chapter’s annual alumni dinner was held recently, and brothers old and
new were able to relax and rejoice in the spirit of brotherhood and tradition. It is apparent that our alumni are one of the strongest and most valuable assets to this house. I encourage all Delta Chapter alumni to stop by the house when you’re in the area. We’d love to meet you and show you the new renovations. Thanks to all of you for the opportunities and generosity you have provided us. The other new officers and I would like to thank outgoing President Joe Grabler ’13, VP Steve Dunn ’12, and Treasurer Nick Biagioni ’13 for all their leadership over the past 12 months. Theta Chi at Rensselaer is a growing fraternity once again, and we plan on honoring each and every brother with our actions every day. Fraternally, Chris Waitkus ’14 Undergraduate President
Boroway ’73 Elected as New Alumni Corporation President (continued from page one) board to replace them are Scott Sasenbury ’97, who works at RPI and is also our faculty advisor, and Pat Doyle ’02, who is local and was the undergrad president in the post-hazing era. They and the other remaining board members have already begun working toward our goals. On other topics—we continue to explore more efficient ways to communicate with all of you. Right now our main efforts are through the printed Delta Dial, our website (deltachapter-thetachi.org), a nascent Facebook effort (Delta Chapter of Theta Chi), and now Twitter (@ThetaChiRPI), but we are exploring other ways as well. We know there are possible pitfalls we might encounter trying to go more electronic, but don’t worry, we’ve got several savvy board members working on all this and we promise to continue to keep all of our alumni in the loop. Speaking of that, thanks to all of you who give to our annual fund so faithfully—it helps tremendously to offset our communications costs. On the RPI front, the new Greek dean has been on board now for about a year, and I’m happy to report that we have a very mutually respectful relationship with
him. He has worked for several other universities and brings a wealth of ideas to the RPI fraternity system, which we will continue to try to implement with Delta Chapter. As we’ve mentioned in previous Dials, the Greek community is now part of Residence Life at RPI, and we (and most fraternities) continue to benefit from the expertise of RPI’s health and safety experts with regard to this situation. As I mentioned earlier, after a long summer of construction, the first two phases of our Capital Campaign are now complete. Final construction of new required underground storm drainage along Burdett Avenue, plus landscaping and a new storage shed, finished off the parking lot expansion begun in 2010. And complete demolition of the kitchen and installation of all new equipment was begun and finished on schedule this summer. Many of our alumni donors chose a five-year payment plan, so it will likely be 2013 before we have enough funds to complete the renovations in the dorm section, but the undergrad brothers are extremely pleased and thankful for the efforts so far. Thank you again to all of you who have so generously given to this effort, and if you haven’t, please consider doing so now. (You can contact Rich Bollam ’66 for more
info at
[email protected].) Alumni Weekend was held in October, and along with the normal contingent of very recent alumni, a surprisingly strong number of brothers returned from the classes of ’61, ’66, ’71, and ’76 this year. It’s difficult to hold an alumni dinner at the chapter house due to the strict alcohol restrictions imposed on all fraternities these days, but we are learning how to host it at Troy venues, as we did this year. I hope many of you from the classes of 2s and 7s think about returning next fall. Also, many thanks to Drew Slocum ’03 for successfully pulling off the second annual summer Theta Chi golf outing in July—the group had a great time and also raised another $1,300 for the building fund. Look for info on the summer 2012 outing later on. Finally, please continue to communicate with any of us on the board (our email addresses are on page two) and also send in news about you and your classmates—the strong alumni involvement in Delta Chapter sets us apart from any other alumni organization on campus, and we have every intention of keeping it that way! Delta Chapter Hosts Successful Alumni Weekend (continued from page one) great turnout of around 60 brothers and guests. Revolution Hall provided a beautiful setting with wonderful service. Brothers from all eras, ranging from actives all the way to the class of ’44, along with their guests, had a great time at the cocktail hour and dinner. In keeping with tradition, active Chaplin Cody Hinrichs ’13 opened the night with a prayer before we sat down to eat.
Dinner was then followed by a few words from Joseph Grabler ’13, active president, and Brandon Bradley ’97, alumni board vice president. To close the evening, a few jokes were shared, and then the brothers joined together to sing “’Tis to Thee, Dear Old Theta Chi.” I would like to offer thanks to all the brothers who made this event a great success, especially Grant Lennox ’44 and his friend Sophie—as well as all the brothers from the class of 1976, who
returned for their 35-year reunion, and their guests. I would also like to thank James Porambo ’08 for all the help with the planning and implementation that went into making this night a great success. I hope to see an even larger turnout next year, and look forward to meeting more of the brothers from throughout the years. Fraternally Yours, Gordon Reynolds ’09
