Chester Community Garden 2016 Spring Notice
Dear Community Gardeners. Spring is finally here and the Community Garden is now accessible for you to start your early preparations and plantings. If you haven't contacted Sarah Jane Noll at the Chester Township Municipal Building to rerent your existing garden plots for this year, please do it right away. Call (908) 8795100 x 823 or email her at: [email protected]. Your plot can be rented to others if you don't take action now and pay the plot fee, as we do have a waiting list. Some basic thoughts and reminders that may help when getting started this season: 1. Rototilling of individual plots is available at $10.00 a plot again this year. Call Mike at (908) 3107014 with your plot number to schedule a date for the work to be done. Note: Plots must be totally cleared of all
materials including fencing, walking stones, rocks, trellises, and leftover planting materials that have not been removed. Plots with raised beds cannot be tilled. Plots with perennial plantings cannot be tilled. Be careful not to turn over or rototill your soil if it is still overly wet. This can damage the structure of the soil and make successful gardening difficult. 2. Rotating your crops each year is important. It is best not to plant the same type of plant in the same spot each season. This can lead to soil depletion and an added chance of disease getting firmly established in the soil, which can affect plant health and yield. 3. In April all plots will be marked out with ground marking spray to re define their 8 feet x 16 feet size. Please stay within these dimensions when working your garden so as not to encroach on a neighbor's plot, and to also help maintain our required 4 ft. wide walkway around the plots. 4. Be conscious of your neighbor's plot space. Plan ahead and try not to grow plant varieties that will intrude on or block out the sun on your neighbor's plot when they mature. 5. The garden is based on "Organic Growing Principles." No herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or nonorganic fertilizers are to be used in the garden. 6. Horse manure and leaf mulch will be available outside the back fence for gardeners' use. Gardening tools are also available. 7. The water system will not be activated until the possibility of a freeze is past, most likely at the end of April or the beginning of May. A sign will be posted at the front gate when the water system is up and running. 8. Remember, as we get into the harvesting part of the season, the Chester Food Pantry is always in need of fresh produce. We had a good system set up last year by the Girl Scouts and other garden members who grew and picked the harvested vegetables for the Pantry. Our veggie coolers were put out on Tuesdays, at the front gate to collect for delivery on Wednesday. Many gardeners participated and we look forward to continuing this program. Gardeners who go on
vacation can put our pink butterfly nets, that are stored in our shed, into their plots to indicate that these vegetables can be harvested for the Pantry. We thank all who helped to make last years' effort more efficient and productive. 9. Garden Maintenance: The overall maintenance of the garden, per our Garden ByLaws, states that all garden plot renters participate in taking care to maintain the garden and keep it orderly and looking good. Our grass walkways need cutting and miscellaneous materials from the plots should not be placed in the walkways, against our outer fencing, or against the shed at any time. Extra or miscellaneous gardening materials should not be left in the garden and should be taken home to store. We are all looking forward to the "warmth of the sun" and a very successful and enjoyable gardening season.
