Chief Page Designer Department: Editorial Reports To: Managing Production Editor Hours: 10-15 hours/week Paid: Yes The chief page designer is responsible for designing and organizing the overall look of the paper for the Minnesota Daily, the independent student-run news organization at the University of Minnesota. The chief page designer will work closely with other Daily employees to present a cohesive and creative print. Responsibilities: Designs the newspaper’s most important pages. Responsible for conceptualizing the design of the Daily’s front page, sports pages, weekly art and entertainment section, special news sections, and feature spreads, as well as creating those pages on deadline with page-design software. Responsible for coordinating with the photo editor and graphics editor to obtain visually compelling content for each edition and for planning special sections and spreads well in advance. Responsible for pursuing the Daily’s goal of being the nation’s best-designed student paper. Supervises the copy desk editor responsible for designing the Daily’s inside news pages each night. Other duties as assigned as Managing Production Editor. Qualifications: Must be currently-enrolled University of Minnesota Student. Familiarity with the news-gathering process, journalism ethics, and the functions of all usual page elements, such as headlines, photos and text. Extensive prior design experience. Strong working knowledge of Adobe InDesign. Demonstrated knowledge of standard newspaper design practices. Experience with the Daily’s page-design software or a similar professional-caliber program.
