CHS Cheer Team Contract PURPOSE o o o o

Create school spirit, pride and loyalty within the High School and Community Support CHS athletic teams. Develop responsibility, leadership, self-confidence, and character. Teach teamwork and pride in quality performance. ELIGIBILITY

The student must be in good standing as defined by KSHSAA Have a signed copy of Cheer Team contract on file with the cheer coach. Have a KSHSAA physical examination form and a Cheney High School Code of Conduct form on file in the athletic director’s office before practicing or attending cheerleading camp. MEMBERSHIP

Membership shall be determined by qualification through a try-out process. RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend all practices, games, performances, camps and any additional events as directed by the Cheer Coach. This may include,  Varsity Football  Varsity Basketball  Varsity Volleyball  Varsity Wrestling  Cross Country Meets  Varsity Bowling Create and hang Spirit Signs as advised by Cheer Coach for the entire 2015—2016 school year. Participate in fundraising efforts as directed by Cheer Coach. Participate in weight-lifting, tumbling, cardio exercise, dancing and stunting. Level of stunting difficulty will be decided upon by coach based on state rules and team ability. Fall and Winter squads will practice together and attend camp together during summer months. Cheer team members must make cheer activities a priority. Being a member is an honor, not a right or a custom.  Each cheerleader will demonstrate their knowledge of sidelines, cheers, crowd chants, band chants and dances prior to performing. If a cheerleader does not meet performance standards, she may be withheld from performing at the discretion of the coach. Be Healthy! Cheerleading can be a strenuous activity. Each member must do her best to avoid injury and properly care for her body. Injuries slow progress for the whole squad in performances.

COMMUNICATION At the High School level, each cheerleader is encouraged and expected to be communicating directly with the coach on all questions and concerns. As part of the CHS Activities Parent and Coach Communication Guidelines, students in activities should communicate first with the coach before parents. If there is continued concern over any issue, parents are invited to discuss them with the coach o

The cheer coach will assign demerits per the guidelines below. If a member accumulates (3) three demerits, she will miss the next performance. Each demerit assigned beyond the initial three (3) will mean that the member will miss another performance. Once a member accumulates five (5) demerits, she will be dismissed from the team and eligibility to try out the following year may be affected. 

Absences : Unexcused – 1 Demerit  Absences will be excused for illness, injury, death in family or required school function so long as the coach is notified in person or by phone call FROM CHEERLEADER prior to practice or performance. Absences during cheer camp should be avoided, if at all possible. Extra-curricular activity conflicts will be handled according to the CHS Activity handbook. The cheer coach should be given advance notice of schedule conflicts. Tardiness, leaving early or Inappropriate/missing Practice Attire – ½ Demerit Disrespect or insubordination toward cheer coaches, faculty, and/or team members – 1 Demerit Negative representation of CHS. This includes, but is not limited to, remarks on social media, unsportsmanlike conduct, negative or disruptive attitudes and acts of violence. – 2 Demerits Uniforms worn at unauthorized events or functions. (Non-school related and/or not approved by the cheer coaches) – ½ Demerit

Cheerleaders are expected to be at all games and performances, in complete uniform, at least 30 minutes prior to the start. Cheerleaders are to remain in the bleachers or on the court/field during half time. ½ Demerit  Complete uniform consists of no jewelry, appropriate fingernail length, appropriate hair style, correct uniform, briefs, bow, socks, shoes, warm ups, poms, white or nude sports bra, etc. No warnings will be given. CAPTAINS/CO-CAPTAINS

Any student who cheered the year prior will be eligible for a captain position. Captains will be decided upon based on letter of interest, tryout scores and conduct throughout the previous year. RESIGNATION

Any cheerleader that wishes to resign their position during the year will submit a letter to the cheer coach. She will not be eligible to try out in the following year. LETTERING

Lettering is based on the following:  Demerits – 3 or less demerits accumulated  Attendance – Member must perform in at least 85% of activities during season to be eligible for letter in that season. Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the coach for prolonged injuries or illness with a doctor’s note.
